The RoleReporting to the CFO and working closely with the leadership group of OneGoal, the Controller will manage a team of five, overseeing all accounting functions, systems, and processes for the organization. This includes leadership of all day-to-day accounting activities in accordance with GAAP accounting standards. They will set the vision and direction for accounting processes and controls and will lead with the highest sense of integrity and focus on accounting excellence in support of strong program outcomes for our Fellows.
You will do this by:
Serving as chief accountant for the organization (20%) - Be the resident expert in US GAAP - Lead accounting communication to the organization to alert staff of important developments in accounting and their impacts to operations, processes, and controls - Provide subject matter expertise on matters affecting/affected by accounting considerations to leadership and the organization - Cultivate a robust understanding of the organization’s current and desired states, using that knowledge to predict and resolve cross-functional barriers towards long-term, multi-year success
Leading efforts on accounting compliance, audit activities, and statutory reporting (20%) - Foster a culture of strong compliance and internal controls across the organization, and build communications and resources that reinforce that vision - Evaluate existing policies and practices to ensure they are continually on par with best practice and the necessary standards - Maintain internal controls and compliance on par with SOX, implementing and documenting standard operating procedures and controls and making adjustments as needed for areas like federal funding and single audit requirements - Lead audit prep, engagement, and execution and be the point person for the external auditors - Complete all statutory and 990/tax reporting - Support financial planning and analysis efforts as needed
Setting the vision and direction for all accounting processes for the organization (20%) - By building deep knowledge of the Strategic Plan and deep partnerships with its internal stakeholders, identify and operationalize needed changes in accounting procedures that support the organization's long term goals - Lead monthly, quarterly, and yearly close process and drive cycle time improvements - Lead ERP system management of accounting processes, leveraging current modules and exploring new modules as needed - Identify and implement controls and policies needed to meet state and federal grant requirements
Managing the Accounting team in execution of monthly accounting processes (20%) - Manage 4 accounting personnel and 1 payroll personnel in execution of all accounting and payroll processes - Oversee execution of monthly close processes and all accounting operations - Ensure all of the team’s work is aligned with the highest sense of integrity and accounting excellence - Implement clear segregation of duties to maintain strong internal controls
Increasing internal staff capacity to ensure team members are effective in their role (15% ) - Champion, foster and embed an inclusive, equitable and unbiased approach into all management and coaching - Ensure team members are effective, developed and retained, without differentiation in retention based on sub-groups (e.g. race, ethnicity, gender) - Support the professional development of your team so that you may effectively delegate and they become subject matter experts of their own bodies of work - Effectively manage and work across lines of difference by taking an affirmative stance to difference that models an environment of inclusivity
Executing special projects/duties as assigned by manager (5%)
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications: - Lived experience of the Fellows we serve (Preferred) - Bachelor’s degree in accounting (Required) and CPA (Preferred) - MBA (Preferred) - Deep understanding of and significant experience with accounting functions in a non-profit environment, including grant accounting, single audits, and designing internal controls (Required) - Knowledge of GAAP and experience with conducting and leading monthly close processes (Required) - Strong organizational and communication skills, able to set up systems and processes to streamline accounting functions (Required) - Strong analytical skills to solve problems and use data to anticipate questions and problems (Required) - Capable leader with track record of reaching ambitious results in leading teams (Required) - Master level proficiency in Microsoft Excel and NetSuite ERP (Required), proficiency in PowerPoint and Word (Preferred)
