The Organization
Since 2009, Gardens for Health International (GHI) has implemented nutrition-sensitive agriculture programs to combat childhood malnutrition in Rwanda. We seek to fundamentally change the treatment of malnutrition by working with families to establish nutritious home gardens, while equipping them with knowledge to support long-term health. GHI’s core program works with government-run health centers. In addition, we collaborate with a variety of governmental and non governmental partners to bring our expertise to new settings and populations, including schools and refugee camps. We are an impact-driven organization with a deep commitment to ensuring that every program we design responds to the unique needs of the communities we serve. Our team is flexible, innovative, and passionate about sparking lasting change. GHI is proudly locally led, with a dedicated staff of over fifty Rwandan nationals. The Role
The Development Lead is an exciting opportunity for a highly organized self-starter who shares a commitment to GHI’s values and work. The Development Lead will oversee annual fund program, capital campaigns, planned giving and major gifts giving while actively collaborating on foundation giving and in-country partnerships – GHI’s annual income is evenly divided between individuals, foundations, and in-country partnerships. The Development Lead will also play an important strategic role, shaping the organization’s overall development and communications strategies and establishing annual goals.
Key Job Responsibilities:
In collaboration with the Development and Communications team (Rwanda), Executive Director (Rwanda) and Board of Directors (U.S.):
Lead individual donor stewardship, including relationship management, organizational updates, and thank you notes
Lead fundraising campaigns, especially end-of-year giving
Support foundation giving, including prospecting, grant writing, and reporting
Review in-country partnerships proposals
Manage relationships with all U.S.-based major donors and foundation contacts Maintain the donor database in Salesforce
Support the design and execution of the organization’s development strategy, raising ~$1 million annually
Support the design and execution of the organization’s communications strategy, including social media, newsletters, and marketing materials such as the annual report
Support quarterly U.S. Board meetings, including producing income projections and development updates
Support bi-annual Advisory Board meetings
Support the Executive Director in preparing for conferences and donor meetings.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree
Must be based in the US
At least three years of relevant work experience, preferably in development/ advancement/fundraising or international nonprofit management
Experience working in cross-cultural, international settings
Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to juggle multiple priorities, big and small
Demonstrated success with fundraising, grant writing, partnerships, and/or marketing
Exceptional written communication skills for diverse audiences
Experience working independently and remotely
Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite
Passion for GHI’s mission, values (commitment to the families we serve, belief in the potential of people, open and honest communication, humility and empathy, and commitment to long-term impact), and culture (“turi kumwe” in Kinyarwanda, meaning “we are all in this together” or “we are one”)
Bonus: demonstrated experience in food, nutrition, agriculture, and/or global health
Hours and Compensation
20 hours/week at $25–$35/hour, commensurate with experience
Increased hours during holiday giving are anticipated and will be compensated
