Job description

Marie Curie is the UK’s leading palliative and end-of-life care charity. We are the largest non-NHS provider of palliative and end-of-life care in the UK, and the only provider across all 4 nations. We specialise in the provision of UK wide community nursing and hospice care, both inpatient and outpatient, whilst providing information and support on all aspects of terminal illness, dying, death, and bereavement.

Our leading research pushes the boundaries of what we know about good end-of-life, and our campaigns fight for a world where everyone gets to have the best possible quality of life while living with an illness, they’re likely to die from.

The care and support we provide is highly valued by the people we care for and their loved ones, but at present we are only reaching around 10% of dying people at the end of life. Right now, one in four people in the UK with a terminal illness, do not get the care or support they deserve at the end of their lives.

We’re looking for an inspiring leader to join us as our Associate Director of Nursing & Quality, where you’ll play a key part in driving Marie Curie’s mission and ensuring the highest standards of care across all our services. Working alongside the Associate Director of Nursing & Clinical Practice, and the Associate Director of Nursing & Patient Safety/Experience you will support the strategic delivery of the Chief Nursing Officer portfolio. Collaborating across internal UK wide teams and external partners and networks, you’ll be central to delivering our quality, regulatory and clinical governance strategies.

In this role, you’ll lead on everything from regulatory compliance and clinical audits to quality improvement initiatives. You’ll develop and oversee our organisation-wide Quality Strategy, ensuring best practices are shared and celebrated, and that our services consistently meet – and exceed – standards. You’ll also work closely with our IT and business intelligence teams to use data to spot trends, highlight successes, and identify areas for improvement.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a proactive, forward-thinking nursing leader who’s passionate about delivering top-quality care and driving continuous improvement. As a member of our Senior Leadership Team, you will play a key role in shaping the future of our services, ensuring we’re ready for the challenges ahead while maintaining our commitment to patient safety and excellence.

Role responsibilities:

  • As a member of the charity’s SLT, help develop the charity strategic direction, and contribute to the overall leadership, direction, and management of the Charity.
  • Provide strong professional clinical leadership to place based teams and clinical services, particularly in service development, service improvement, and in ensuring the delivery of high-quality clinical services.
  • Provide senior nursing leadership and expert professional advice on nursing, and clinical practice to managers, medical staff, Executive Directors and Trustees when required.
  • Deputise for the Chief Nurse, during periods of absence, including contributing to the Board and other meetings.
  • Provide visible, compassionate, and accessible leadership to support the delivery of clinical services to patients and those who are important to them, and create a climate which encourages teamwork, maximises individual potential and stimulates innovation.
  • Represent the Charity externally and develop partnerships with other organisations to promote the development of services locally and nationally.
  • Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of a range of corporate projects as identified by the Chief Nursing Officer.
  • As directed by the Chief Nursing Officer, lead the co-design, development and oversight of a Marie Curie Quality Strategy, engaging all Directorates, key internal and external stakeholders across the UK, Trustees and service users.
  • Lead the review, redesign, development and evaluation of the organisational Quality Account, working to the statutory, contractual requirements, whilst further demonstrating the full extent of quality service provision across Marie Curie.
  • Lead the co-design of an organisational wide methodology and approach to continual quality improvement, establishing processes for measuring and monitoring improvement across all services both at place base level and across central functions.
  • Lead the redesign, development and evaluation of a robust clinical audit and compliance programme for Caring Services that incorporates both functional and observational audit requirements, establishing an Audit Accountability Framework to support good governance.
  • As directed by the Chief Nursing Officer, take the lead on providing organisational assurance of regulatory compliance, including actions to address areas of non-compliance.
  • Develop and lead the organisational strategic approach to regulatory preparedness and inspection across all places within the 4 nations, establishing clear processes for internal review, assessment, validation and support.
  • Operates within the agreed income and expenditure budget, working to ensure financial performance is optimised.
