Job Description

We currently have an opportunity for a Senior Coverage Counsel Attorney to join our Coverage Counsel Group in our Plymouth, MN; New York City, NY; Chicago, IL; or Farmington, CT office or remotely nationwide.

Responsibilities

  • Provides legal advice and counsel to claim teams. Reviews moderately complex claims to provide legal advice on contractual obligations. May provide legal advice in connection with proposed courses of conduct, additional investigation, or other-claims related questions as appropriate.
  • Identifies and documents controlling or persuasive legal issues.
  • Conducts research to identify and analyze similar issues and recommend courses of action. Draws on inductive/deductive reasoning from case law to determine the company's contractual obligations.
  • Communicates findings via meetings, correspondence, and formal legal opinions.
  • Assists with the direction and implementation of coverage litigation strategy.
  • Maintains a strong professional knowledge of competitive, regulatory and legal environments and applies this information effectively.
  • Leads and/or participates in various legal and risk-identification and/or mitigation projects in support of Claims. Participates in industry events as a representative of the company.
  • May manage or mentor others in the department.
  • Anticipates and meets all customer needs (internal and external).


Requirements:

  • Demonstrates advanced technical knowledge and skills including claims and coverage.
  • Demonstrates the ability to diagnose, analyze and solve highly complex problems.
  • Requires a familiarity with the law in all 50 states and a sense for judiciary objectives in resolving contractual responsibilities.
  • Must have strong analytical, decision making, problem-solving, communication, listening, project management, and organizational skills. Must be able to work both independently and as a highly collaborative member of a team.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office suite and other electronic systems.


Education and Experience:

  • JD Required.
  • 7-10 years of progressively complex, specialty lines insurance advice and/or litigation experience.
  • Substantive experience with one or more of the following insurance coverage issues is a plus: financial lines (D&O/management liability, E&O/professional liability, banking/investment advisor); trucking and non-trucking liability (NTL) insurance; accident and health insurance; technology/cyber insurance; entertainment insurance; and/or bad faith/extracontractual claims and litigation.
  • Experience with uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage a plus.


Our salary ranges are determined by many factors including location, role, experience and skillset of the candidate. The following ranges displayed reflect the target base salary for new hires, but your recruiter will share more specific compensation information with you during the hiring process. The typical base salary range for this position is: $125,000 – $166,000, based on the factors aforementioned. For candidates located in San Francisco, CA; Hoboken, NJ; and the New York City metro area, the base salary range is $145,000 -$170,000. In addition to base salary, full time Intact employees are also eligible for bonus potential and a full range of benefits to include: 401(k) savings and annual contributions of up to 12% of annual salary, competitive paid time off programs, medical, vision and dental plans, mental health support programs, life and disability insurance, paid parental leave and a variety of voluntary benefits.
