What’s the role?
The Senior Director of Risk and Fraud within our Trust & Safety Organization leads our fraud and risk strategy and operations that is the backbone of safeguarding Etsy’s marketplace to prevent fraud loss at scale. As a two sided marketplace, fraud shows up in many complex ways. You will architect and evolve fraud prevention strategies while balancing great customer experience.
We are seeking a senior organizational leader and a resilient self-starter who thrives in driving structure in ambiguous spaces, working in fast paced environments and using strong strategic and critical thinking skills to define solutions to new problem sets. The ideal candidate has a passion for developing others, spotting and developing talent, and bringing out the best in your teams. You are a doer and an influencer who will work directly with our cross-functional partners (Engineering, Product, Policy, Legal, etc.), as well as all of the teams within Trust & Safety, to scale global projects from inception to launch.
This is a full-time position reporting to the Vice President of Trust & Safety. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support

This role requires your presence in Etsy’s Brooklyn Office once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. What does the day-to-day look like?
This role will focus on financial loss from fraud across a two sided marketplace. Your organization includes teams: Fraud, Account Security, Merchant Risk and Recovery.
Develop ongoing strategies to quickly and efficiently identify and remove high risk and fraudulent sellers from the marketplace, minimizing negative impact to Etsy and our buyers.
Build and cultivate an impactful internal team of 50+ people. You will also develop and oversee outsourced components of the work, including third party integrations
Set the vision and strategy for your team and oversee employee performance, implementing, managing and reporting through metrics and key performance indicators.
Set the long-term strategy and guide managers and program managers to support your vision through daily, weekly, and monthly initiatives.
Help your partners across the company build successful products by highlighting marketplace risks and strategizing solutions.
Review, recommend, and assist in the implementation of new methods, processes and procedures to make daily operations more efficient and effective.
Partner with Product, Engineering and Analytics teams to conceptualize and refine automated detective controls crafted to identify risks, based on seller behavioral shifts and patterns.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:
12+ years of leadership experience in risk, fraud, or payments, demonstrating deep subject matter expertise in fraud with a proven ability to apply that expertise in a two-sided marketplace
A thoughtful, collaborative leader with strong executive-level communication skills and a highly developed ability to influence others.
A successful track record leading n large operational organizations specializing in payments risk, account abuse, customer support, and/or strategy.
The ability to partner seamlessly with product and engineering team members in furtherance of developing tech solutions to support risk detection and operational excellence.
Experience assessing regulatory risks, as well as practical, business, and reputational risks and can apply that assessment to a marketplace business model.
Executive presence and clearly articulate strategies, goals and outcomes at the C-Level.
Adaptable and resilient in nature and quickly pivot - and bring your team along for the ride - as the business landscape evolves.
