Job description

The Advanced Planning Advisor (APA) has a background with demonstrable success retaking and earning complex high net worth client relationships. While the APA’s wisdom was developed as a leader of client relationships, future success will be as a mentor to advisors, helping them retain and attract high net worth client relationships.  

The APA works in our Planning Department alongside industry thought leaders to support advisors with technical planning needs and questions for complex cases.  The APA must be extremely knowledgeable with tax and estate planning concepts and strategies, plus thought leadership across the spectrum of wealth planning is important. The APA is who experienced advisors seek for guidance, or at least a second opinion. The APA supports advisors within the RIA and the Advisor Solutions business. 


Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Respond to incoming advisor questions
  • Conduct case consultations with advisors
  • Conduct research on provisions/policies impacting planning
  • Help define the resource needs that would be most impactful to advisors
  • Contribute to the development of advisor resources (e.g., identifying, developing, creating, reviewing, and/or researching) 
  • Act as the final reviewer for technical planning information being released to advisors, inclusive of resources and responses for advisors from less experienced APAs and associates.
  • Present educational/informational sessions to advisors
  • Support the technical planning development of less experienced Advanced Planning Advisors and associates
  • Attend firm conferences and other regional meetings


Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • CFP designation required 
  • CPA, JD, or comparable designation desirable 
  • 10+ years of direct client advising experience
  • Exceptional planning knowledge/experience with an emphasis on tax planning

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Collaborative team-orientated approach with a spirit of service 
  • Knowledgeable about financial industry, financial products, and financial planning concepts
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail
