Blue Ridge Power (BRP) is seeking a Civil Engineer to assist BRP’s engineering and estimating departments in responding to RFPs and site layout development. The Civil Engineer is an integral part of the engineering team, specializing in providing accurate and comprehensive site layouts and quantity estimates for civil work on solar and solar + storage projects. This role focuses on the earlier site planning, estimating, and project development phases. 

The Civil Engineer reports directly to the Lead Civil Development Engineer. 

This position can be remote, preferably within comfortable travel distance of one of our BRP office locations in Asheville or Fayetteville, NC. Any travel will be fully reimbursable. A competitive salary and annual bonus are offered.  

What You’ll Do: 

  • Perform civil site development tasks including due diligence, preliminary design, quantity take-offs, and estimating to respond to customer RFPs. 
  • Utilize AutoCAD Civil 3D to prepare site plans and earthwork calculations. 
  • Utilize GIS for hydrologic and terrain analysis, calculate takeoff quantities, and prepare summaries efficiently. 
  • Coordinate/Interface with different engineering disciplines, commercial, and construction teams to ensure effective development of solar projects. 
  • Collaborate with project stakeholders to gather project specifications, technical requirements, and relevant information for accurate cost estimation. 
  • Analyze project risks and uncertainties impacting costs, collaborating to identify potential mitigation strategies. 
  • Assist in preparing bid packages, proposals, and other deliverables related to cost estimation for civil projects. 
  • Offer insights and recommendations on value engineering opportunities to optimize project costs while maintaining quality standards and site constructability. 
  • Continuously refine development processes, tools, and workflows to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and consistency. 
  • Stay informed about industry best practices, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes that impact civil estimating. 
  • Maintain clear and concise documentation of projects throughout the layout and estimation process. 
  • Investigate local, state, and federal regulatory requirements to ensure project compliance. 
  • Proactively self-review deliverables and make corrective changes as necessary. 
  • Report to the Lead Civil Engineer and collaborate with other Civil Engineers on the development team. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Must-Haves: 

  • 3+ years’ experience working as a civil engineer. 
  • Knowledge of civil engineering principles, construction methodologies, and cost estimation techniques. 
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, evolving environment with varying priorities. 
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills with the ability to make necessary assumptions in ambiguous regulatory environments supported by sound engineering judgment. 
  • Proven ability to thrive with minimal oversight while timely reporting on progress and completing tasks within deadlines. 
  • Strong sense of ownership and personal responsibility for work and deliverables. 
  • Basic knowledge of grading design and construction methods is required. 
  • Basic knowledge of erosion and sediment control principles for large-scale construction projects is required. 
  • Basic knowledge of hydraulic and hydrology (H&H) principles, is required. 
  • Experience with local, state, and national stormwater and construction permitting (NPDES, CGP, Section 404, WOTUS), is required. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel, Word, OneNote, Teams, and Outlook. 
  • Working level knowledge and familiarity in using AutoCAD Civil 3D. 
  • Proficiency in using GIS applications (ArcGIS or QGIS) and spatial processing tools. 

Nice-to-Haves: 

  • Knowledge of GIS data types, coordinate reference systems, and experience working with data between GIS/CAD/Google Earth, preferred. 
  • Experience with SWPPP’s preferred. 
  • Experience with solar project development. 

Education and Certifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or another related field is required. 
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification required. 
  • Active Professional Engineering License preferred.   
  • Must possess and maintain a current valid driver’s license required. 

Working Environment and Physical Demand: 

  • This position can be remote, preferably within comfortable traveling distance of one of our BRP office locations in Asheville or Fayetteville, NC.  
  • Office and project site visits may be required when needed. This could include travel up to 25%. 
  • This position works in an office environment.
  • Must be able to sit/stand at a desk and utilize a computer, for extended periods.  
  • May require lifting/carrying items up to 30 pounds.
