Job description

Ivy Tech is currently accepting applications for a TLM Instructor located at the Rockville Correctional Facility in Rockville, IN. Come join our team!

General Purpose and Scope of the position:

The Classroom Instructor works on-site in a state prison with students who are enrolled in TLM’s Software Engineering/Coding Program. This role combines teaching, mentoring, and supervisory tasks to ensure a positive and supportive learning environment.

TLM classrooms are unique to other educational programs, other in-prison programs, and even differ from classroom to classroom. The classroom instructor is primarily responsible for the culture, morale, and community of the classroom. The subject material in the TLM curriculum is challenging and often focuses on group work – things that are not always common in in-prison settings. The classroom facilitator’s goal is to provide support and guidance, in order to create a community based on collaboration and mutual growth.

This is a full-time teaching position located at the Rockville Correctional Facility in Rockville, IN.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Arrive at classroom location prior to arrival of students and open class for program use
  • Maintain all required prison security protocols, and secure the classroom at the end of each day
  • Facilitate classwork and projects, and work with the students to develop their skills in the Software Engineering/Coding Program
  • Follow the registration, enrollment, training and completion guidelines as specified by TLM for the vocational training being offered.
  • Maintain records as required by the Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC), the Correctional Facility, Ivy Tech Community College and TLM.
  • Interface with The Last Mile Curriculum Development staff and remote instructors to resolve questions from the class and interpret the live instruction
  • Provide regular feedback to the Classroom Operations team in order to facilitate continuous course improvement, and to maintain standards of excellence
  • Assist students in learning the vocational specific vocabulary, learning and applying employability skills and improving academic skills.
  • Communicate with TLM’s Classroom Operations team in regards to classroom and facility updates, including upcoming events, class progress and deadlines, program closures, facility lockdowns, and student write-ups
  • Manage learner access to curriculum in the Learning Management System (LMS) by “unlocking” new content according to student progress
  • Grade assignments and student presentations using provided rubrics (in the LMS)
  • Provide opportunities for professional development through additional classroom activities (e.g. presentations, classroom meetings)
  • Notify TLM of planned absences in advance
  • Approach subject matter in a positive and enthusiastic manner.
  • Provide guidance and counsel to the students which will promote their welfare and their proper educational development.
  • Attend meetings as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication skills including clear speaking and empathic listening
  • Excellent situational awareness, and the ability to remain calm under stress and variable conditions
  • Confidence in speaking to groups of various sizes, primarily in a teaching situation
  • Maintain a positive and supportive attitude at all times
  • Provide honest and constructive feedback and appropriate encouragement to students
