Job description

About the Role: We are looking for a Litigation Counsel to join our global legal team. We are seeking a high-level strategic thinker who can actively lead litigation matters across a broad array of subject matters with a focus on products liability, commercial and general liability litigation. You will join a highly respected legal department at a leading materials science company with a distinctive company culture.

This position offers multiple work arrangements: on-site at our facility in Elkton, Maryland, hybrid or fully remote work allowed in most locations within the United States, depending upon the responsibilities of the role and business needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise/manage litigation matters and serve as a resource for the Company on complex legal issues
  • Interact with and cultivate relationships with other legal team members to develop business-focused litigation strategy
  • Engage, oversee, direct and/or evaluate the performance and progress of outside counsel and experts representing the Company
  • Work with key Leaders across the Company to help identify and mitigate legal issues and assist in crafting solutions to protect the Company
  • Support the management of a medical products liability docket
  • Provide litigation support for EMEA and APAC regions
  • Prepare and offer presentations on litigation issues and policies to internal leaders and Associates
  • Coordinate required internal and external litigation reporting
  • Minimize legal exposure by proactively reviewing existing policies, practices, forms, and contracts, and providing counsel on emerging risks and issues; monitor changes in relevant laws and regulations and communicate guidance to appropriate colleagues
  • Contribute to global legal team projects and strategic initiatives


Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school and member in good standing with at least one State Bar
  • Minimum of 4 years of litigation experience, delivering legal services as an external counsel or within a complex multi-industrial organization
  • Experience managing cases through pleadings, motion practice, discovery, dispute resolution and pretrial preparation
  • Experience in commercial litigation and product liability (preferably medical device liability experience); and environmental litigation is a plus
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills and case evaluation abilities
  • Strong advocacy and influencing skills, including the ability to help bring people with diverse positions to a common view
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to make solid judgement calls under pressure
  • Ability to navigate in a dynamic, cross-functional, multi-cultural and multi-national environment with both local and remote teams with quickly changing priorities and multiple tasks
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically 10%


Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in litigation and arbitrations outside the U.S.
  • Willingness to drive continuous improvement and change management in the provision of legal services
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with others in a multi-national organization
