Job description

ITHAKA’s mission is to expand access to knowledge and education around the world. Our services — Artstor, JSTOR, Portico, and Ithaka S+R — enable people everywhere to learn, to grow, and to overcome historical barriers to education. In carrying out our mission, as employees we feel a deep responsibility to each other and our well-being, and are committed to building and sustaining a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace.

This internship is partially funded by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and aims to support employers, such as ITHAKA, in offering opportunities to individuals with a connection to Michigan. This could include those attending a college or university in the state, residing in Michigan, or having personal ties to the area. It is designed to provide students in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) fields with meaningful, hands-on experience within Michigan.

The Role

The Blueprint Team is a dynamic part of our Platform Engineering department, where we design, build, and maintain the foundational infrastructure that powers the entire organization. We enable teams to deliver innovative products efficiently, securely, and at scale, making a direct impact on ITHAKA’s success.

As a Software Engineering Intern on the Blueprint Team, you will:

  • Build Reusable Solutions: Contribute to tools and libraries that help teams work autonomously, fostering innovation and efficiency across the platform.
  • Identify & Resolve Friction Points: Participate in streamlining the development lifecycle, implementing modern solutions to eliminate inefficiencies.
  • Work Across the Stack: Gain hands-on experience in a wide array of languages, frameworks, and technologies integral to ITHAKA’s web architecture such as our Micro Frontend Architecture.
  • Collaborate & Innovate: Work alongside talented engineers, learning the ins and outs of maintaining a scalable and cohesive platform that supports thousands of users daily.

Our primary tech stack:

  • Languages: JavaScript/TypeScript, Python
  • Frameworks: NodeJS, Fastify, Vue, React
  • Tools/platforms: Docker, Kubernetes, GitLab CI, AWS

This internship spans a period of 12 weeks, beginning on June 2, 2025. To be considered for this opportunity, you must have a connection to Michigan. This could include those attending a college or university in the state, residing in Michigan, or having personal ties to the area. Please ensure your application is submitted by the deadline of February 7, 2025.

Responsibilities
  • Work closely with full-time engineers to write software and develop solutions enabling other engineers at ITHAKA to deliver the software powering JSTOR faster and safer.
  • Actively participate in Agile ceremonies to plan and retrospect on sprints as well as daily standup meetings.
  • Adopt a problem-solving mindset to work collaboratively on overcoming technical challenges.
Experience and Skills
  • 2+ years in related degree program
  • Willingness and ability to learn new technologies and approaches to software development
  • Experience with at least one high-level programming language (eg: JavaScript, Python, Java, C++)
  • Bonus:
    • Experience with at least one frontend framework (eg: React, Vue, etc.)
    • Familiarity with Docker, K8s, CI/CD pipelines
