Job description

ROLE PURPOSE:  

  • The Oncology Medical Director provides leadership to the oncology medical affairs team aligned to the BU’s strategies, business goals and customer needs.
  • Represents the company to external bodies for medical topics and issues that apply to the oncology BU.
  • Represents Pfizer Oncology through relationships with medical associations, societies, academic medical centres and industry associations.
  • Represents Pfizer Oncology in high-level interactions with regulatory authorities as required.
  • Takes accountability of the oncology BU medical team for the compliance of BU medical operations, including medical communication and materials in line with the ABPI Code and Pfizer SOPs.
  • In partnership with the responsible functions, supports and facilitates in-country adherence to pharmacovigilance, product quality, regulatory, medical information and clinical activities and processes to relevant regulations and Pfizer SOPs.
  • Manages overall performance and talent development for the oncology medical team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Development, Implementation and Communication of the Oncology BU Medical Affairs Strategies

  • Participates in strategic planning process to provide insight, expertise and medical support to the business.
  • Ensures processes and procedures within oncology medical affairs are continuously reviewed and updated to meet current and future business needs.
  • Aligns medical team with global and regional brand functions, where appropriate.
  • Establishes vision, direction and role purpose for the team.
  • Plans and executes the oncology BU KOL strategy on highly ethical and medical professionalism grounds and brings their input into the medical strategies and plans.
  • Supports the development of country oncology medical plans on scientifically sound principles that will bring benefits to the patients, working in close collaboration and in alignment with the global teams and in accordance with the overall brand and portfolio strategy.
  • Allocates financial and FTE resources to each brand as per the operating plan provisions.
  • Implements medical strategies according to the medical plans, across the oncology BU portfolio of medicines, with emphasis on data generating and data communication activities.
  • Oversight of in country non-interventional studies and other RWD studies related to oncology portfolio.
  • Ensures in-country implementation and execution of oncology product-specific risk minimization measures.
  • Provides medical support and guidance to oncology BU to ensure that the commercial objectives of each medicine are realized through adherence to the highest ethical and regulatory standards.
  • Provides scientific input to the country market access strategies and tactics.
  • Communicates the value of the medical affairs function to internal stakeholders, championing cross functional working and working with the global/regional medical teams.
  • Communicates the value of the medical affairs function to external stakeholders, aligning with customer needs, enhancing reputation and bringing medical insights into the organisation.

Build Organizational Capability and Management of People

  • Leads, motivates and enhances the performance of the oncology medical affairs team through coaching and by direct example.
  • Supports talent management within the oncology medical affairs team, ensuring that colleagues are aware of opportunities aligned to their development plans. 

One Pfizer 

  • Represents the immediate point of reference to the Country President and Country Medical Director for oncology medical topics or issues.
  • Partners with the responsible functions with respect to responses to Regulatory, Safety, and/or Clinical oncology issues with potential impact on public health, or a potential impact on the organization's reputation.
  • Represents Pfizer Oncology externally with Government, NHS leaders, patient organisations and media.

In-Country Compliance

  • Ensures consistent application of local regulations and standards and the ABPI Code.
  • Supports management of quality reviews and quality events related to the oncology BU.
  • Supports country audits and inspections as required. 

Memberships

  • Member of the country medical leadership team.
  • Member of the oncology BU leadership team.

REQUIRED SKILL SET 

  • Executive leadership and line management experience is strongly recommended.
  • Medical doctor or pharmacist with solid education and clinical/patient experience is strongly recommended.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of oncology and haematology landscape and pipeline is strongly recommended.
  • Deep understanding of the UK health and research environment including its structure, relevant policy frameworks, key members and scientific societies is strongly recommended.
  • Significant industry experience or significant senior management experience in the health care industry. 
  • Deep knowledge of the ABPI Code, relevant regulations and Pfizer SOPs.
  • Strong understanding of pharmacovigilance, medicines regulation and the drug development process and how these aspects impact the oncology product portfolio.

  • Shape the healthcare environment, including for example as a member of a Pharma or Research association.
