Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:  The Chief Engineer, System Thermal Hydraulics Engineering and Analysis is the SME for integration across disciplines of Fuels Engineering, NSSS system design and analysis, and Plant Operations. In conjunction with the other Chief Engineers, they will provide overall technology leadership for NuScale plant design and technology. This is an individual contributor role reporting to VP Engineering and leveraging technical experts within the functional engineering organizations to achieve desired objectives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Responsible for coordination and integration of thermal hydraulics system design and analysis (e.g., RCS and SG stability, system operating conditions, system margin management)
  2. Remains engaged with design and analysis work across engineering and leverages expertise in thermal hydraulics, NSSS systems, and NuScale plant commissioning and operation to actively seek out and resolve integrated challenging technical issues
  3. Supports complex methodology development and supports functional organizations in work execution
  4. Leads cross-functional teams to solve large/integrated technical issues working with functional organizations with comprehensive understanding of technical, business, and strategic impacts
  5. Serves as a subject matter expert for system requirements development and verification
  6. Sits on the engineering change board and evaluates design changes for enterprise impacts and opportunities; ensures changes fully consider impacts to NSSS system design and analysis, thermal hydraulics, plant operation, testing basis, licensing, and interfaces to adjacent technical areas.
  7. Chairs and participates in design reviews and provide expert technical reviews on key work products
  8. Supplies overall technical leadership for value engineering reviews to ensure plant is economically competitive; detailed knowledge of value engineering opportunities and intuition for appropriate timing and application
  9. Provides mentoring and training in areas of expertise; lead development of organization-wide training programs in pursuit of engineering excellence
  10. Remains informed of developing technologies and techniques associated with Engineering to identify innovative ways to improve technology
  11. Creates formal networks and serve as an internal and external technology spokesperson for the organization
  12. Assists business development personnel in client contract development by representing the company’s design and benefits
  13. Performs other duties as assigned

  • Quality Assurance:  Commits to understand the quality assurance regulations, standards, and guidelines of 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, 10 CFR 21, and NQA-1 or equivalent.

MINIMUM SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS AND ABILITIES:

  • Education: Minimum of a Master’s degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution required, Doctorate preferred.
  • Experience: A combination of either of the following is required: 10 years of full-time engineering experience with a PhD, or 12 years of full-time engineering experience with a Masters. Experience must be in nuclear related engineering activities with progressively increasing technology leadership roles required. Broad background including safety analyses and testing experience required.
  • Industry Requirements:  Eligible to work under Department of Energy 10 CFR Part 810.

Pay and Benefits:  

The target pay range for this position is $179,958 - $217,191 annually.  The full pay range is $161,342 – $252,355.
