The Associate Director role is a senior level consulting staff position. This position requires a highly motivated problem solver with strong analytical ability and a desire to advance within the organization. An individual with an entrepreneurial spirit and an ability to apply creative solutions is a natural fit for this position. The work of an Associate Director will involve both execution and oversight of engagement work streams that may be either qualitative or quantitative in nature, and responsibilities include management of junior staff, design of statistical and financial analysis, modeling of financial data and markets, quality control, development and presentation of client deliverables, management of existing client relationships, industry research, and expansion of business.
Responsibilities
- Plan and manage all aspects of small to medium sized client engagements and discreet segments of larger projects. Responsible for leading initiatives that span the Revenue Cycle continuum including Patient Access, HIM/Coding, Charge Capture, Revenue Integrity, Denials/Underpayments Management and Recovery, Patient Financial Services.
- Accountable for operational and financial metric improvements for each engagement, including but not limited to increasing charge capture, optimizing workflow and communication between clinical areas and revenue cycle, preventing denials and collections inefficiencies, and prevention of issues that cause revenue leakage and/or compliance risks.
- Responsible for creating project charters, workplans, realization schedules, benefit tracking tools, client deliverables/work products, and transition planning documents.
- Delegate assignments to staff, instruct and monitor progress, and review work product for completeness and accuracy.
- Develop analyses and financial models using transactional data and/or financial data.
- Generate client deliverables and make valuable contributions to practice articles and whitepapers.
- Manage client relationships with senior-level client leadership and communicate results and work products.
- Demonstrate creativity and efficient use of relevant software tools, analytical methods and computer models to develop solutions.
- Participate in group practice meetings, contribute to business development initiatives and office functions such as staff training and recruiting.
- Adhere to project budget and hours by prioritizing assignments and responsibilities in order to meet goals and deadlines.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (e.g., BS, BBA, MBA, MHA, M.A., M.S., etc.) with a preferred focus in Management, Accounting, Finance, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Health Information Management or related discipline.
- Applicable industry certification is preferred (e.g., RHIA, RHIT, CPC, COC, CCS, CRIP or other AHIMA / AAPC / AAHAM certification).
- 8-15 years of consulting work experience in Revenue Integrity and/or Charge Capture including performance improvement and process re-engineering, revenue management and redesign, and reimbursement and recovery strategies.
- Extensive operational expertise with a primary focus on HIM/Coding/Outpatient Clinical Documentation Improvement, Charge Capture, Revenue Integrity, Denials/Underpayments Management and Recovery, Payer Contracting.
- Firm understanding of the Medicare IPPS, OPPS and ASC payment systems.
- Strong understanding of documentation and various charge capture processes across high-volume, revenue-producing hospital departments
- Strong understanding of compliance requirements
- Familiarity with Charge Description Master (CDM) maintenance and enhancement by analyzing departmental charges, identifying and implementing charge improvements, charge reconciliation, and determining reimbursement impact of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) accuracy
- Thorough understanding of the relationship between codes and revenue in the reimbursement process, specifically how revenue is generated from CPT codes and the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS)
- Familiarity with regulatory changes that impact charging practices
- Expertise in clinical operations and billing office workflows
- Strong communication skills with physicians and clinical departments
- Strong project management experience and proven success contributing to assessments and project implementations
- Ability to draft work plans, project budgets, timelines, and deliverables
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively manage team and client relationships
- Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills
- Ability to succeed in a high-performance and rapid team environment where client expectations are consistently met or exceeded
- Desire and ability to manage processes and other consultants
- Strong proficiency in MS Office applications, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, and Outlook
- Fluency in data analytics
- Familiarity with Epic, Cerner, Allscripts, MEDITECH, Athena/IDX desired
- Willing to travel consistently (50% - 75%, depending on project requirements and client expectations)
Associate Director Salary Range: $125,000 – $300,000 per year.
