The Role
Why it’s important: High-quality data and insights are the core value that Stears provides to its customers. They empower our customers to make important decisions during the investment process. This role focuses on sourcing and collecting company, funds, country and transaction data that our customers need during the investment process.
What it includes: As a Data Analyst, your mission is to find, gather, and synthesise data for our data platform. Your work will primarily focus on manually collecting detailed data on entities such as companies, transactions, and funds in Africa. While manual data collection is the primary responsibility, there are opportunities to leverage LLM tools and explore prompt engineering to enhance the data collection processes. Analysts at Stears should be comfortable with manual data collection while having the technical curiosity and skills to explore more advanced approaches where possible. The work includes research, data entry, data wrangling, data cleaning, quality checks, and contributing to visualising and analysing data.
Responsibilities
As a Data Research Analyst at Stears, you are responsible for:
- Scouring the internet, public databases, and other sources to find useful, reliable data points, datasets, and information sources.
- Reading articles and reports to extract specific pieces of information.
- Inputting data into our database with precision, including manual data entry and tagging.
- Extracting/scraping data from PDFs, websites, and other non-structured formats.
- Conducting diagnostic data analysis to identify inconsistencies, gaps, errors, or discrepancies in datasets.
- Cleaning, combining, and organising datasets to ensure consistency and accuracy.
- Exploring and utilizing large language models (LLMs) and prompt engineering for automating data extraction and collection tasks (training will be provided).
- Contributing to the analysis of data and creating engaging, interactive data visualisations (training will be provided in Flourish and other tools).
- Conducting quality checks on all data inputs and outputs to ensure data integrity.
We are looking for someone who has:
- Availability: Ready to begin work as soon as possible.
- Knowledge in finance: Beginner to intermediate knowledge is a plus.
- Technical aptitude: Training in data science, statistics, econometrics, mathematics, or related fields.
- Self-starter attitude: Ability to quickly learn on the job, including teaching yourself new skills when needed.
- Experience: 1-2 years of experience with Python or related coding skills as a priority, alongside tools like Google Sheets (formulas and pivot tables), SQL, and PDF scraping software. Experience with data visualization tools such as Power BI or Tableau is a plus.
- Attention to detail: Strong ability to ensure data accuracy, promptly identifying and correcting errors for optimal data quality.
- Data curiosity: Passion for working with data and enthusiasm for using tools like LLMs to innovate and improve data processes.
