Job Description

The Economic Security Operations Unit within RAND’s National Security Research Division is seeking mission-driven Economic Security Research Project Specialist to contribute to research, analysis, technical work, and project management at the intersection of economics, finance, and national security. The successful candidate will engage in interdisciplinary projects that focus on maintaining U.S. competitiveness, developing public-private partnerships, and identifying key strategies to advance U.S. economic interests as well as global security.

Successful candidates will possess a combination of technical expertise, analytic capabilities, and project management experience.

This is a one-year term position with the possibility of renewal for up to two additional years.

Duties

Successful candidate will work on multi-disciplinary, geographically distributed teams to provide both analytic and project support on tasks. This support may include completing literature reviews, cleaning and analyzing data, drafting technical reports and presentations, managing budgets and sub-contractors, as well as coordinating work among project team members and ensuring that teams meet deadlines. This position will also include collaboration with policymakers, industry partners, and external researchers.

Required:

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct high-quality, rigorous research and policy analysis, ideally in areas related to economic security and strategy.

  • Strong analytic skills, with the ability to synthesize complex technical and policy issues into actionable recommendations.

  • Superb organizational skills with experience managing research teams, budgets, contracts/subcontracts, and timelines.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, tailored to technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and facilitating partnerships with public and commercial entities.

  • Demonstrated interest in one or more of ESOU’s research areas, such as tariffs, sanctions, supply chains, maritime risks, economic competitiveness, etc.

  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.

  • Fluency with MS Office suite

Preferred:  

  • Familiarity with multiple sources of relevant economic data.

  • Proficiency in Python, Java, C/C++, or other popular programming languages.

Education and Experience
BA/BS plus seven years of related work experience; or master’s degree plus four years of relevant work experience required. Preferred degrees include economics, public policy, political science, international security, and related fields.

Security Clearance
Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government clearance is preferred but not required.

Salary Range: $75,700-$112,400

RAND considers a variety of factors when formulating an offer, including but not limited to, the specific role and associated responsibilities; a candidate’s work experience, education/training, skills, expertise; and internal equity.  The salary range includes base pay plus RAND’s sabbatic pay (which provides additional compensation above base pay when vacation is taken). In addition, RAND provides strong benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, paid time-off and more.

Location

We are actively hiring for this position in our RAND offices in Washington, DC; Santa Monica, CA; Pittsburgh, PA; and Boston, MA. We offer a hybrid work arrangement, combining work from home and on-site options.
