About the job
This position is needed to evolve Twilio Voice’s Security and Traffic Management platform to the next level by leveraging cutting edge technologies to build and deploy software in a fast paced environment. This platform enables Routing to the PSTN, enforces regulatory compliance and is part of the broader Voice Connectivity umbrella.
As an engineer on this team, you will be at the forefront of innovation but would also have a unique opportunity to gain deep industry insights and build expertise in massively scaled distributed systems. You'll be part of our top-tier teams chartered to advance our Voice Traffic Management platform, using cutting-edge technologies, developing high-performance solutions that are driven by low latency and high availability requirements. You will partner with product managers, designers, architects, and engineers in the Voice team to create products in the Voice Connectivity space that seek to tackle complex, real-world challenges.
Responsibilities
In this role, you’ll:
- Be an owner: Design and implement real-time services with high throughput and low latency requirements, verify, deploy and operationalize them
- Wear the customer's shoes: Work closely with key stakeholders to understand customer needs and, devise and deliver, simple, robust and scalable solutions
- Write it down: Be comfortable expressing thoughts and ideas as detailed prose and use it as an effective means to collaborate with leads, architects and cross functional teams
- Be bold: Embrace the challenge of scaling a complex distributed platform with points of presence globally, each one concerned with high availability, high reliability, high throughput, low latency, and media fidelity
- Draw the owl: Figure out novel ways of solving customer problems for Video and Voice channels
- Be Curious: Eager to learn, deepen and grow your knowledge and experience of scalable, distributed systems
Qualifications

Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related engineering field
- 0-1 yr hands-on experience in a school or industry setting building software that solves real world problems
- Solid Computer Science fundamentals that spans data structures, algorithms, operating systems, networking and distributed systems
- Able to demonstrate proficiency in at least one Frontend language
- Able to demonstrate proficiency in at least one Backend language (JVM based)
- Able to learn quickly and be proactive in gaining knowledge needed to work on scalable, distributed back end services
- Able to work well in a team setting, open to feedback and highly motivated
Desired:
- Knowledge and experience working with the webRTC and/or SIP protocol
- Knowledge and experience working with REST APIs
- Knowledge of responsive system design
- Experience with scaling distributed back end systems
- Experience using SQL/NoSQL databases and caching technologies
- Exposure to cloud technologies such as AWS, GCP, OpenStack or Azure and managing infrastructure as code (Terraform etc)
Location
This role will be remote, but is not eligible to be hired in CA, CT, NJ, NY, PA, or WA.
Travel
We prioritize connection and opportunities to build relationships with our customers and each other. For this role, you may be required to travel occasionally to participate in project or team in-person meetings.

The estimated pay ranges for this role are as follows:
- Based in Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Vermont or Washington D.C.: $120,000/annually
- Based in New York, New Jersey, Washington State, or California (outside of the San Francisco Bay area): $126,500/annually
- Based in the San Francisco Bay area, California: $141,000/annually
- This role may be eligible to participate in Twilio’s equity plan and corporate bonus plan. All roles are generally eligible for the following benefits: health care insurance, 401(k) retirement account, paid sick time, paid personal time off, paid parental leave.
The successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills, experience, and geographic location.
