About the Role


The Energy, Oceans and Diplomacy Strategic Communications (Senior) Associate at the Global Strategic Communications Council is a key member of the geopolitics diplomacy team and is accountable for the development and execution of impactful strategies which seek to create multilateral space for action on energy and oceans in collaboration with the network and partners.


GSCC’s ocean’s work is focused on changing the story on oceans and climate diplomacy. The oceans cover 71% of the Earth's surface and contain 97% of the Earth's water. They are not only critical from a nature perspective but they touch and link all the world’s top economies. Our Ocean focus covers Pacific diplomacy, the shipping industry, offshore wind, offshore oil & gas as well as coastal protection and restoration projects.


You will be the key focal point for partners working at this cross section of multilateral action on oceans and energy. You will have the gravitas to advise diplomatic partners on impactful strategic communications interventions in order to accelerate the roll out of ocean climate solutions and advance a fossil fuel phase out, while rolling up your sleeves in order to implement said interventions at key diplomatic fora and throughout the year.


You will understand climate diplomacy and media landscapes and will be adept at relationship and partnership building. If you are a creative and driven practitioner, who can collaborate well with others in order to achieve impact we’d like to hear from you.


You will report to the International Diplomacy Lead working with colleagues and partners across the globe.


How you'll contribute

  • Developing and executing a global strategy to advance ocean climate solutions and the fossil fuel phase out rooted in the current and emerging geopolitical context and in line with GSCC goals
  • Building, maintaining, and utilizing relationships with a wide range of partners including high level individuals to achieve strategic impact, acting as a point person for the network in key fora
  • Provide strategic insights on current evolving geopolitical trends, how they impact on climate, oceans and energy diplomacy and related multilateral processes
  • Reacting quickly to emerging opportunities and changes in the external context, while working with an international network to guide the delivery of relevant communications content;
  • Monitoring, evaluation and reporting on communications efforts (including some financial and administrative tasks)
  • Any other duties to be assigned from time to time

  • Demonstrated understanding and professional experience of strategic communications, specifically on oceans, energy transition and diplomacy.
  • Ability to assess a changing landscape, identify crucial intervention points in highly pressured environments
  • A solid understanding of the changing global political and media landscape
  • Track record delivering effective communications strategies on complex global issues in collaboration with a diverse network.
  • Strong diplomatic skills and interpersonal skills which allow you to quickly build trust with colleagues, partners, experts, and civil society and gravitas sufficient to work directly with high profile individuals and partners from diverse backgrounds at all levels
  • Well networked with a diverse range of partners
  • Good time management, good team-player with a passion for excellence
  • Ability to track a range of relevant and complex issues;
  • Outstanding English language skills, with a track record of producing engaging and impactful communications materials
  • The disposition to work generously with colleagues in a high-trust global community of peers
  • The strong multi-disciplinary skillset necessary to flourish in a fast-paced and wide-ranging work environment and work nimbly across phone/video conferencing, timezones, slack, email, Trello, etc.;
