Mutual of Enumclaw works exclusively with local independent agents to offer insurance products for individuals, families, farms, and businesses. We currently operate in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Montana and Wyoming.
The Sr. Database Administrator (SDBA) is responsible for managing and evolving the organization’s database infrastructure, both on-premises and in the cloud. Reporting to the Director of Data Operations and Warehousing, the SDBA oversees the optimization and management of SQL databases, ensures efficient migration of SQL Server environments to cloud platforms, and prioritizes performance, security and resilience. The role requires expertise in database replication, backups, encryption, user privileges, and cloud cost optimization. The SDBA also contributes to the development of IT policies, processes, and strategic planning, while providing training and organizational support.
Location: The successful candidate will work remotely, must be able to work during our core Pacific Standard Time (PST) business hours, and must have high-speed internet (internet speed test required).
Hiring Range: $126,231 - $140,675
Salary Range: $126,231 - $154,474

Responsibilities:
Cloud Database & Cloud Migration
- Oversee the administration, configuration, and maintenance of Cloud Databases (Azure SQL/AWS RDS/Snowflake).
- Plan and execute migrations from on-premises MS SQL Server environments to Azure or other cloud platforms.
- Ensure that cloud environments follow industry best practices for security, performance, and reliability.
Database Performance & Health Monitoring
- Monitor and optimize database performance for both on-premises and cloud-based SQL Server instances.
- Proactively identify and resolve database-related issues before they impact system performance.
- Implement health checks, alerts, and performance baselines to ensure high availability and uptime.
- Provide on-call support for database-related issues, ensuring prompt resolution of critical incidents and minimizing downtime.
Data Platform Expertise
- Work with Snowflake for additional data warehousing and analytics use cases.
- Implement best practices to ensure data integrity, security, and privacy.
- Provide guidance to teams on best-fit database solutions across various project needs.
Database Administration Best Practices
- Manage SQL Server replication, including transactional, snapshot, and merge replication as needed.
- Develop, automate, and test backup and recovery strategies to ensure minimal downtime and data loss.
- Implement security and compliance measures, including encryption, least-privilege access models, and robust auditing.
Cost Monitoring & Optimization
- Track, analyze, and optimize database-related spending on cloud services.
- Provide recommendations on resource sizing, instance tuning, and purchase models to optimize cost efficiency.
Collaboration & Leadership
- Exemplify behaviors that support our IT vision and beliefs.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Management, Engineering, Security, and Infrastructure) to align database strategies with organizational goals.
- Mentor and guide others while sharing best practices and technical expertise.
- Contribute to architectural decisions and long-term roadmap planning for database infrastructure.
Qualifications:
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Extensive experience with Cloud SQL Databases, including deployment, scaling, and performance optimization.
- Advanced skills in T-SQL scripting and query optimization.
- Deep understanding of SQL Server replication, backup strategies, encryption, and high availability/disaster recovery solutions.
- Familiarity with Snowflake is preferred.
- Experience with Docker/Kubernetes for containerizing of SQL Server Databases is preferred.
- Proficiency in scripting languages such as PowerShell, Python and Bash for automation.
- Hands-on experience with version control systems like Git.
- Strong communication, problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
- Self-driven with a strong commitment to continuous learning and staying current with emerging database technologies.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related degree preferred.
- 5+ years of SQL Server Database Administration or equivalent professional experience.
- Proven experience migrating SQL Server workloads from on-premises to Azure or other cloud platforms.
- In-depth knowledge of performance tuning, monitoring and troubleshooting for both on-premises and cloud environments.
- Experience working in Agile teams and applying Agile methodologies.
- Experience running SQL Server in containers (Docker, Kubernetes) on cloud platforms preferred.
- Familiarity with Terraform or other Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools to automate infrastructure provisioning and maintenance preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer, including video conferencing.
