We believe quantum computing will change everything. It will have the power to transform the foundations of giant industries that rely on intensive computation. PsiQuantum is on a mission to build the world’s first useful quantum computer, capable of delivering these transformative results. We know that means it will need 1 million qubits, error correction, a scalable architecture and a data center footprint.
By harnessing the laws of quantum physics, quantum computers can provide exponential performance increases over today’s most powerful supercomputers, offering the potential for extraordinary advances across a broad range of industries including climate, energy, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, finance, agriculture, transportation, materials design, and many more.
PsiQuantum is uniquely positioned to deliver on the promise of quantum computing years earlier than our competitors. Our architecture is based on photonics which gives us the ability to produce our components using existing high-volume semiconductor manufacturing processes, the same processes that are today producing billions of chips for telecom and consumer electronics applications. Since photons don’t feel heat, we can take advantage of existing cryogenic cooling systems, the kind that have been operating at facilities like the Stanford Linear Accelerator (SLAC). And because photons are in fact light, they can move between subsystems at tremendous speed using standard fiber connectivity.
Our team is building a utility scale quantum computer and the software tools needed to build fault tolerant quantum applications. We’re a highly motivated and collaborative group focused on a singular goal - building the world’s first useful quantum computer on the fastest path possible.
There’s much more work to be done and we are looking for exceptional talent to join us on this extraordinary journey!
Job Summary:
PsiQuantum is singularly focused on the delivery of a useful utility-scale fault tolerant quantum computer. In addition to deploying a world-class quantum computer, we aim to deliver a world-class quantum software user experience to both our external customers and internal developers. After many years of development, we have created an incredible developer platform for the design and simulation of quantum algorithms. We are now scaling our platform to many users while continuing to expand the power of our new product.
We are seeking a well-rounded and hands-on Director of Software Engineering to provide strategic leadership and direction for PsiQuantum's Applications Systems Engineering. As the leader of this team, you will oversee the development and deployment of our new quantum algorithm developer platform for both external and internal quantum computing developers. You will be responsible for shaping the vision, strategy, and execution of our engineering roadmap, ensuring it effectively supports the team’s mission to find and deploy useful applications to run on our quantum hardware. You will guide the growth of our young software team by establishing strong software development practices and culture, seeking out new talent, and mentoring both front end, backend, and platform engineers. Given we are a small team, you will also need to be hands-on, deeply involved in technical design and capable of directly contributing to the development of our product.
Responsibilities:
- Lead by example of strong work ethic, establishing strong software development and engineering practices and a high-quality bar for the software development and platform team, focused on team collaboration and user success.
- Hire exceptional engineers to grow the team to support our ambitious quantum developer product strategy.
- Drive architectural decisions, design documentation, and lead code reviews.
- Coordinate deployment of software products into cloud-based production environments.
- Oversee our agile development process in close coordination with the product team and software release coordinator program manager.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members in the development of the product as well as for personal career development; manage team member performance.
- Align team objectives and work with company objectives, in close coordination with other engineering leaders and product leaders.
- Define and champion the technical vision and strategy for application software, platform, and systems engineering
Experience/Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent experience launching software products.
- 10+ years of software development experience including 5+ years building and managing teams of 10+ software engineers (both frontend and backend software developers).
- Experience working with product and program management teams in delivering new SaaS enterprise applications to paying customers.
- Proficiency with software development best practices including design, documenting, testing, and debugging, applied to software development lifecycle management.
- Deep expertise in object-oriented programming in Python and data engineering in SQL for scalable, high-performance applications.
- Proven experience with Design-Driven Development (DDD) methodologies and a strong understanding of user-centered design principles.
- Knowledge and experience with AWS infrastructure and services including containerized architectures (Docker, ECS, EKS), database systems (RDS, Databricks, S3), serverless systems (API Gateway, Lambda).
- Strong experience in platform engineering and infrastructure-as-code using Terraform on AWS.
- Knowledge and experience with frontend development. Familiarity with Svelte Kit is a plus.
- Experience with platform engineering to deliver hosted, managed IDEs to researchers and developers.
- Experience creating products for developers and/or researchers is a big plus.
