Lead Software Engineer - PR3

This role is in the 99d Experience team. The team owns the contest experience and future of 99designs, the world’s leading marketplace for freelance graphic design.


About The Role:

With ambitious goals for the future of the 99designs site, this team needs an energetic, forward-thinking lead engineer—a place where the right candidate will meet challenges and thrive.

We are looking for a talented, committed, and driven India-based senior software engineer to join our product team. We seek applicants who are passionate about their craft, have hands-on experience in design and development, and can thrive in an agile environment.


The Ideal Candidate:
Can serve as the primary engineering decision leader on projects
  • Delivers high-quality code autonomously; structures and breaks down deliverables into actionable tasks, guiding team members in execution.
  • Solves complex software problems.
  • Makes technical and design trade-offs to produce logical, testable, maintainable, and efficient solutions.
  • Anticipates, handles, and mitigates risks.
Communicates effectively
  • Leads team discussions.
  • Engages effectively with stakeholders and peers.
  • Proactively works to improve engineering practices on the team.
Acts like an owner
  • Contributes proactively to product discussions.
  • Produces long-lived artifacts for the team and stakeholders about the product and team standards.

  • Identifies skill and knowledge gaps in the team and works with leadership to resolve them.

Key Working Relationships:
  • Engineering Manager – Responsible for the technical direction of the team and acts as your direct supervisor.

  • Product Manager – Owns and sets the team’s product direction and manages the product backlog.
  • Product Designer – Leads the design activities in the team.
  • Software Engineers – Collaborate to bring the product to life.
  • Domain Architect & Domain Engineering Lead – Lead the wider Logo & Brand engineering team.

What We Expect From You:
  • 6-10 years of experience building software in fast-paced, agile teams.
  • Minimum 4 years of commercial experience with PHP.
  • Experience with React or other modern JavaScript frameworks.
  • Proficiency with TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS, Docker, and infrastructure as code.
  • Experience working with REST or GraphQL APIs.
  • Strong system design skills.
  • A passion for continuous learning and improvement to stay effective in your role.
  • Solid understanding of agile principles.
  • A positive mindset—equal parts curious, collaborative, and can-do.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, along with strong verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to collaborate with internal & external stakeholders, understanding business drivers while articulating constraints and options.
