Etsy’s Site Reliability Engineering team is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead our Observability team. This team builds and supports Etsy’s telemetry stack which consists of Prometheus, Grafana, BigQuery, StatsD, Vector, Google Cloud Logging, Honeycomb.

We are having an ambitious roadmap to improve visibility of services and infrastructure running across VMs and Containers. As a team, we are a strategic advantage for Etsy by building the future of observability. As the Engineering Manager of this team, you will be

  • Growing and empowering a globally distributed team, by giving them the confidence to make decisions independently that lead to their personal and professional success, and enable them to become technical leaders.

  • Responsible for the team's technical strategy and roadmap in close collaboration with many engineering teams who directly depend on the critical Observability and Infrastructure tooling the team offers.

  • Be ready to roll up your sleeves and work through technical challenges with your team.

  • You will have the courage and experience to be frank and ambitious but humble enough to listen to others. You’ll communicate early and often, building trust and collaboration between engineers and teams across multiple countries and time zones.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Senior Manager, Core Infra.

In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.

For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. What’s this team like at Etsy?

The Observability team is an SRE team in the Etsy Foundation SRE org that’s responsible to collect, store, and analyze telemetry data across thousands of VMs and 20+ Kubernetes clusters. This team works closely with many product and infra engineering teams across Etsy. On the technical front this team handles

  • All the pipelines for application and infrastructure metrics, logs, traces

  • Tools for identifying regressions in production and providing visibility through various channels

  • Exploring ML capabilities to better identify regressions in telemetry

  • Understanding the cost of telemetry and providing visibility into it

What does the day-to-day look like?

  • Lead a team of 5 to 8 SREs. You would be spending the majority of your time guiding and coaching engineers to achieve results together, at the same time not hesitate to dive deep technically if required.

  • Partake in technical conversations with your engineers and leverage your previous experience to provide technical direction and influence technical decisions

  • Build, lead and mentor your team on communication (up, down, and sidewards), technical strategy, delivery, and execution

  • Work closely and collaboratively with partner teams, understand their problems, and be flexible to changes in the roadmap

  • Define methods and success metrics for both the projects in progress and future proposals.

  • Lead all aspects of people development - Mentor, Performance Reviews, Promotions, Hiring, and Retention

  • Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that
your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

  • Significant hands-on experience as a software engineer / SRE / System Admin, preferably in a cloud environment, with the last 3+ years in technical team management.

  • Experience in leading 5 to 8 engineers and distributed teams.

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to explain complex technical issues accurately to technical and non-technical audiences at different levels of detail.

  • You have experience in making data-driven decisions and are flexible to course correct and iterate at scale.

  • Successful track record of leading teams who build and support distributed systems, preferably in the Observability domain.

  • You’ve developed strong mechanisms for organizing, tracking, and measuring tracks of technical work, and making them visible to various stakeholders.

  • You know what motivates your team and you are able to carve out the necessary space for them to do their best work.

  • You are engaged in technical decisions and discussions but you know when to defer to technical leaders around you

  • You have a clear understanding of the direction your team needs to take to achieve their goals and establish success metrics to iteratively progress towards it.
