The Senior Advisor, Africa Region provides strategic vision and leadership to strengthen and advance nursing and midwifery across Partners In Health (PIH) care delivery sites in alignment with broader organizational and site priorities with a particular geographical focus on the 5 PIH Africa sites. The Senior Advisor, Africa Region will work closely with the Chief Nursing Officer and care delivery site leadership to drive a larger agenda toward advancing nursing as a profession. They will lead efforts with site nurse leaders to raise visibility and maximize opportunities to promote shifts in national, regional, and international policies for nursing and midwifery working to support nurse leader inclusion at the highest levels within ministries of health, nursing councils and boards, and global health organizations. The Senior Advisor, Africa Region has a macro level understanding of what is happening across the PIH Africa sites and can facilitate opportunities for optimal site-to-site communication and coordination on emerging and synergistic opportunities for collaboration around programmatic, educational and technical advising concerns.
Responsibilities:
Strategic Vision & Leadership: 40%
Develop and execute PIH nursing vision and strategy in collaboration with Chief Nursing Officer and ensure strategy is reflective of care delivery site priorities
Support and integrate nursing leaders into other PIH work streams to ensure representation across the organization
Accompany care delivery nursing and midwifery leadership around efforts to strengthen nursing profession and advance nursing leadership
Provide mentorship and support to build current and emerging nursing leadership capacity directly at care delivery sites
Integrate site strategies into the PIH strategic plan and nursing strategy
Identify opportunities for interprofessional collaboration with various PIH teams and departments
Provide strategic planning and development to support ministries of health, nursing and midwifery councils to advance and strengthen nursing and midwifery practice and professionalization
Partnerships & Communication: 30%
Position PIH as a global nurse leader at high level meetings with external partners and conferences
Develop and steward relationships with leading global nursing organizations
Raise the visibility of nursing and midwifery internally and externally
Manage academic partnerships in alignment with PIH strategic priorities and site needs, identifying gaps and opportunities for partner involvement or new partners when appropriate
Disseminate the outcomes of PIH nursing and midwifery activities through webinars, manuscripts, conferences and speaking engagements
Participate and engage in thought partnership with the PIH nursing and midwifery advisory board and steering committee
Policy & Advocacy: 20%
Liaise with ministries of health and in-country regulatory bodies to promote, support and advance nursing and midwifery education and practice concerns
Identify key opportunities for PIH nursing engagement and leverage strong nurses across PIH care delivery sites
Lead efforts to demonstrate impact of nursing and midwifery to support policy & advocacy strategy working across departments
Clinical Practice: 5%
Promote systems and clinical innovation that support evidence-based practice and patient safety
Provide technical expertise in the areas of clinical program development, management, training, implementation, and evaluation
Generate opportunities for professional development, growth and clinical expertise
Development & Fundraising: 5%
Engage and manage individual donors specific to nursing
Provide technical input during the development of proposals and technical reviews
Collaborate with the Development team on future and current funding opportunities
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, or PhD in nursing or related field preferred
At least 5 years of clinical bedside practice
5 years of demonstrated experience in public health, public administration, health care management, or international development
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with maturity and poise to effectively interact across a diversity of stakeholders
Demonstrated competence to assess priorities and manage a variety of activities in a time-sensitive and complex environment and to meet deadlines with attention to detail and quality.
Ability to travel internationally 50% time between Africa-based care delivery sites (Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Rwanda, and Sierra Leone)
Interest in social justice strongly desirable
Strong sense of accountability, personal initiative, and responsibility
Remote working experience preferred
Experience living/working in limited resourced environments for extended periods of time
