About you and this role
Dow has an exciting opportunity for an Expert Counsel – Litigation in its Product & Insurance group. The preferred location is Midland, MI, but Houston, TX or virtual locations in the United States may also be considered.
In this role, you will provide legal counsel to clients in practice area on all aspects of legal risk across a wide range of issues, in consultation with internal and external legal experts as appropriate. This requires in-depth conceptual and practical knowledge in job disciplines and basic knowledge of related job disciplines to solve complex problems. You may lead projects or project steps within a broader project, with manageable risks and resources requirements, or may have accountability for on-going activities or objectives. You will act as a resource for colleagues with less experience and work independently with minimal guidance.
Your assignment will include litigation management of a variety of litigation matters for Dow and its affiliated companies. This will include product liability, mass torts/toxic torts, including Union Carbide Corporation’s asbestos personal injury cases, and may also include commercial litigation. The assignment will also include providing counsel and analysis on insurance coverage issues and supporting Dow’s captive insurance entities.
Responsibilities
- Independently provide legal counsel to clients.
- Provide client legal training and education on a variety of topics.
- Review and draft legal documents.
- Actively manage external counsel and experts.
- Collaborate with internal legal subject matter experts and other Company resources.
- Oversee paralegals and administrative staff in the Legal Department and coordinating with business and functional clients within Dow and its affiliated companies concerning discovery.
- Establish and monitor expense budgets.
- Set strategic direction for each case and related docket of cases.
- Develop and implement settlement strategies.
- Proactively communicate to Legal Department management and clients.
- Participate directly in key depositions, hearings and trials.
- Oversee appellate issues.
Required Qualifications
- Juris doctor or Master of Laws.
- A minimum of 10 years practicing as an attorney.
- Admission to State Bar or eligible for admission.
- Must be willing and able to travel up to 50% annually to meet business needs.
- A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.
Preferred Qualifications
- 12+ years’ demonstrable competence practicing law with a major law firm or corporation.
- Strong law school credentials.
- Trial and litigation experience.
- Arbitration experience.
- Product litigation (including asbestos) experience.
- Commercial litigation experience.
- Insurance coverage experience.
- eDiscovery experience.

Must be able to work as part of a cross-functional team and build effective client relationships. Close teamwork and collegiality with others on the legal team is essential. Respect for inclusiveness and fostering diversity of thought and style are critical.
- Work Ethic – Intense dedication and commitment to the job is essential. Hours match the needs of clients and the demands of specific projects. The ability to be reached by clients and others on the legal staff during off-hours is important. Ease of interaction and spontaneous communication are also key to a strong and beneficial client counseling relationship.
- Consulting Skills – Understands the short- and long-term needs of clients and colleagues and provides expertise to improve business and functional results.
- Legal Knowledge and Judgment – Understands and appropriately and effectively responds to legal issues relevant to specific role in function.
