JOB SUMMARY
The Building Automation Systems Controls Estimator is responsible for supporting the estimation and proposal development efforts for the company’s building automation projects in the mission critical / data center industry. This role is pivotal in ensuring accurate and competitive pricing, contributing directly to the success and profitability of our projects. The Building Automation Systems Controls Estimator will analyze customer project requirements, develop detailed cost estimates, and support the proposal process, ensuring alignment with the company’s strategic objectives and client expectations.


The Building Automation Systems Controls Estimator reports to the senior estimator and collaborates closely with various departments, including engineering, project management, procurement, and business development. This role requires a keen understanding of project specifications, industry standards, and cost drivers, as well as the ability to work effectively with vendors and subcontractors to secure the best possible pricing and terms. This person plays a critical role in the handover process, ensuring a seamless transition from estimation to project execution.


On a day-to-day basis, the Building Automation Systems Controls Estimator receives general instructions on routine work, detailed instructions on new projects, tasks or assignments.  May work independently, consistently exercising discretion and independent judgment on individual work, or may work under immediate supervision.  May serve as lead on routine projects, tasks or assignments of limited scope.


The Building Automation Systems Controls Estimator supports multiple estimation projects concurrently while maintaining a high level of accuracy and detail. This role involves frequent interaction with clients to clarify requirements, present estimates, and address any concerns. Additionally, the Estimator continuously seeks to improve estimation processes and tools, staying informed of industry trends and best practices to ensure the company remains competitive in the market.


This person will communicate and operate in line with organizational goals and values, as well as departmental objectives. 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Estimating and Cost Analysis
  • Analyze project specifications, drawings, and other documents to prepare comprehensive estimates
  • Develop accurate and detailed cost estimates for building automation projects, including labor, materials, travel, expenses, and subcontractor costs
  • Identify potential cost-saving opportunities and recommend value engineering solutions

Proposal Development
  • Support the development of proposals, ensuring all required documentation and pricing information is complete and accurate
  • Collaborate with business development and technical leads to create compelling and competitive proposals

Vendor and Subcontractor Management
  • Solicit and evaluate bids from vendors and subcontractors to ensure competitive pricing and quality standards
  • Negotiate terms and pricing with suppliers to achieve the best value for the company

Client Interaction
  • Engage with clients to clarify project requirements and address any concerns related to estimates or proposals
  • Present estimates and proposals to clients, providing clear explanations and justifications for cost components

Project Handover
  • Work closely with project management teams to ensure a smooth transition from estimation to execution
  • Provide detailed documentation and support to project teams during the handover process
Continuous Improvement
  • Continuously evaluate and improve estimating processes and tools to enhance accuracy and efficiency
  • Utilize data from project execution, estimate histories and other KPIs to improve future estimates
  • Stay informed of industry trends, pricing fluctuations, and innovative technologies to ensure competitive and up-to-date estimates

Completion of Assigned Tasks and Deliverables on Time and on Budget
Performs Other Related Duties as Assigned

Requirements
POSITION REQUIREMENTS (INTERMEDIATE level for all the following)
  • In-depth understanding of building automation systems, including HVAC, electrical, and controls
  • Knowledge in estimating software and tools, with a strong ability to adapt to new software tools
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to assess complex project requirements and develop accurate estimates
  • Ability to analyze market trends and apply cost data effectively
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly and persuasively
  • Skilled in client engagement and presenting detailed estimates and proposals
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple estimates and proposals simultaneously
  • Strong attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and completeness in all aspects of the estimating process
  • Strong negotiation skills, particularly in dealing with vendors and subcontractors
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including clients, vendors, partners, and internal teams
  • Knowledge of multiple DDC, PLC and SCADA product line details and costs
  • Skilled at using MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams), along with exceptional organizational skills for file management
  • Skilled in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail
  • Ability to work successfully in a remote environment thru effective communication and organizational skills, self-motivation, proactiveness and resourcefulness in a distraction free workspace
  • Ability to identify and analyze complex problems, evaluate alternatives and implement effective solutions
  • Ability to analyze and prepare documents, reports and correspondence
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form (technical and non-technical information) 
  • Ability to communicate effectively directly with clients and at times serve as primary point of client contact
  • Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently with little supervision 
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet close deadlines 
  • Ability to effectively plan and delegate the work of others
  • Organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously

  • On occasion the employee may move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds  

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
  • Up to 10%, this may include travel to any or all 50 US states 
  • Travel is defined as physically leaving home on behalf of business activities including but not limited to client sites, meetings with other employees, meeting for business development purposes, running errands on behalf of the business, attending industry conferences, etc.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, business, or related discipline 

PLUS
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in estimating in building automation / construction industry
  • Proven track record in leading successful estimating efforts for complex projects
