The Associate Director of Learning & Development will play a pivotal role in shaping and delivering impactful learning initiatives across the organization, with a focus on supporting the professional growth of lawyers, paralegals, and business professionals. This individual will oversee the Legal Learning team and the Leadership Development team, ensuring the design, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive programs that align with the firm’s strategic objectives. Essential job functions include:

  • Oversee the design and delivery of technical training programs and curriculums for lawyers and paralegals to enhance their legal expertise and practice-specific skills.
  • Develop and implement training programs that address emerging trends, best practices, and client needs.
  • Partner with PSC Leaders to identify skill gaps and develop targeted learning solutions.
  • Oversee all aspects of the firm’s CLE programming to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and support the ongoing professional development of lawyers.
  • Oversee the development and delivery of legal writing programs to improve the drafting, analysis, and communication skills of lawyers and paralegals.
  • Partner with subject matter experts to ensure training materials are practical, relevant, and aligned with the firm’s standards of excellence.
  • Work in collaboration with the Learning Design and Facilitation Teams on the design and implementation of leadership development initiatives for lawyers and firm leaders, including programs for new partners and high-potential associates.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to identify leadership competencies and create tailored development plans.
  • Oversee professional development programming for lawyers at all levels, including HB University, HB Emerge, HB Core, HB In-House and New Partner Orientation.
  • Develop and implement initiatives to support career progression, skill-building, and long-term success.
  • Enhance and manage mentoring programs to foster meaningful relationships, knowledge sharing, and career guidance.
  • Ensure mentoring initiatives are inclusive, impactful, and aligned with the firm’s diversity, equity, and inclusion goals.
  • Provide strategic oversight and leadership to the Legal Learning and Leadership Development teams, ensuring alignment of efforts and resources with the firm’s goals.
  • Manage, coach, and develop team members to achieve high performance and professional growth.
  • Foster a collaborative and innovative culture within the Learning & Development function.
  • Translate strategic initiatives into metrics to measure the effectiveness and impact of learning initiatives.
  • Use data and feedback to continuously improve program content, delivery methods, and outcomes.
  • Stay informed about industry trends and best practices in legal and leadership development.

Position Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree is required.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in learning and development, talent management, or professional development, preferably within a law firm or professional services environment.
  • Strong understanding of legal technical skills, CLE requirements, and the professional development needs of lawyers, paralegals and business professionals.
  • Proven experience designing and delivering leadership development programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and develop high-performing teams.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and organizational skills.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of learning and development.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects in a dynamic and complex environment, meeting deadlines and successfully managing the daily workload.
  • Demonstrated ability to serve as a change agent and effectively drive new initiatives in partnership with other firm departments.

Compensation And Benefits

Employees are entitled to compensation commensurate with skill and experience. The exact compensation will vary based on skills, experience, location, and other factors permitted by law. The expected compensation ranges for this position in various states and jurisdictions are as follows:

  • State of California: $144,000 - $275,000
  • State of Colorado: $132,000 - $236,000
  • State of Illinois: $130,000 - $252,000
  • State of Maryland: $139,000 - $211,000
  • State of Massachusetts: $144,000 - $275,000
  • State of Minnesota: $144,000 - $238,000
  • Jersey City, NJ: $156,000 - $283,000
  • State of New York: $134,000 - $289,000
  • State of Washington: $139,000 - $265,000
  • Washington, D.C.: $185,000 - $273,000

The above salaries do not include a discretionary bonus, however bonus opportunities are non-guaranteed, and are dependent upon individual and firm performance.
