Job description

We’re seeking a talented Marine Hull and P&I Underwriter with experience underwriting or working within the passenger vessel and commercial fishing industries.


Our marine team represents one of the largest MGA marine-specialists groups in the country with program authority for multiple carriers with relationships dating back to the group’s founding over 30 years ago. When acting within our in-house program capacity, we solicit, underwrite, rate, and work accounts directly with our agents. Our in-house claims team also adjusts many of these claims or takes lead on our carrier’s behalf. We also have the ability to tap into our large broker network to further assist with risks that require additional capacity, markets options, or quota-share solutions.


Your Impact:

  • Select and write specific product new business and renewal commercial accounts as defined in authority to achieve production via defined rate, retention, and profit goals.
  • Provide direction to teammates (may include any of the following: Analysts, Raters, Associate Underwriters or Technicians - delegate tasks as needed).
  • Manage assigned agency relationships and make agency visitations as needed.
  • Coordinate claims services as needed.
  • Refer items exceeding your authority level to Department Manager in a timely manner to provide an analysis on a referral form with your recommendations.
  • Maintain a workflow for your assigned territory which meets all the standards and expectations of the department and consistency to strive to improve workflow.
  • Negotiate excess insurance on accounts where needed.
  • Train or assist in training of others as necessary. Help co-workers improve their skills by sharing your knowledge.
  • Monitor new business results, hit ratio, lost business, and profitability versus goals defined by Department Manager.


Successful Candidates Will Have:

  • 5+ years’ commercial marine underwriting experience, including in Hull/P&I
  • Proficiency with technical underwriting, including exposure identification, coverage evaluation, understand and applying appropriate risk / rate relationships, and file documentation in support of underwriting decisions
  • Occasional travel may be required

At One80 Intermediaries, base pay is one part of our total compensation package, which also includes a comprehensive suite of benefits, including medical, dental, vision, disability, life, and retirement savings, and paid time off and paid holidays for eligible employees. The total compensation for a position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. The expected base pay range for this position is between $84,200.00 - $150,000.00 + bonus. The actual base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including geographical location, education, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
