Join Our Team: Make a Real Difference for Children and Families

"I want our inspections to be of the system, by the system, for children and families. That means that inspections are something that is done with providers, not to them. They are built around professional dialogue and are conducted with professionalism, empathy, courtesy, and respect."

Sir Martyn Oliver, HMCI

Are you a passionate leader in children’s social care, ready to take the next step in your career? If so, we want you to join our dedicated team of His Majesty's Inspectors (HMI), Social Care at Ofsted.

Why Join Us? As an HMI, you'll play a vital role in improving the lives of children and young people across the country. Your leadership, expertise, and recent practice experience will be instrumental in shaping the future of social care. You will be part of a collaborative community of professionals who share our core values: professionalism, empathy, courtesy, and respect.

What You’ll Do:

  • Conduct inspections with providers, fostering an open, professional dialogue.
  • Work across a diverse range of settings, from local authority services to children’s homes, independent fostering agencies, and the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (Cafcass).
  • Partner with key services, including the Care Quality Commission (CQC), His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS), and HMI Probation, engaging in joint targeted inspections and Area SEND inspections.
  • When not on inspection or collaborating with colleagues, you'll have the flexibility to work from home.

What’s in It for You?

  • The opportunity to work alongside talented professionals, exchanging ideas and influencing national policy.
  • Ongoing professional development and career progression within Ofsted.
  • A potential stepping stone to senior leadership roles — either within Ofsted or back in the sector.

This is more than just a job — it’s a chance to make a real impact. If you’re ready to use your skills and experience to help shape the future of children’s social care, we want to hear from you.
