The Opportunity:
 As First Nations Engagement Coordinator, you'll help support First Nations volunteers in the Weaving Threads program by providing training, check-ins, and resources. You’ll also coordinate the Brighter Days wellness program, helping with sessions, materials, and documentation. You’ll assist with outreach, contribute to other Indigenous programs, and help spread the word about Kids Help Phone’s services.  

Additionally, you’ll engage with Indigenous youth, lead fun and meaningful activities, and work with community members to tailor sessions to their needs. You’ll also help build connections with partners and organizations, document feedback, and support fundraising and advocacy efforts. Your contributions will make a real impact on supporting Indigenous youth and communities. 

The First Nations Engagement Coordinator will work directly with Indigenous youth and add more First Nations perspectives to KHP programs and services therefore only First Nations applicants with lived experience of First Nations worldviews, cultures, and values will be considered. 

What You’ll Do:

Program Delivery 

  • Support First Nations volunteers in Weaving Threads: An Indigenous Engagement Program through onboarding and training, regular check-ins, and sending materials. Assist volunteers in their role of building awareness of Kids Help Phone services by providing ongoing input, connecting volunteers with resources and more.  
  • Coordinate Brighter Days: An Indigenous Wellness Program supported by Sun Life including booking and supporting sessions, ensuring participating groups receive all program materials, and accurately documenting session information. 
  • Coordinate the distribution of outreach materials to First Nations organizations. 
  • Contribute to the delivery of the New Trails program and KHP mentorship program. 
  • Contribute to Indigenous program and service promotion, development and evaluation. 
  • Accurately document all volunteer engagement in KHP’s customer management solution 

Brighter Days Facilitation  

  • Engage virtually or via phone with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit youth from across Canada during the facilitation of Brighter Days sessions  
  • Virtually facilitate engaging activities and exercises that will help Indigenous youth access resources and develop skills to support their well-being. These activities will employ culturally safe approaches that incorporate traditional teachings while adhering to program curriculum.  
  • Engage virtually or via phone with community helpers such as teachers for pre-session. conversations to customize Brighter Days sessions to the unique needs of each participating group.  
  • Accurately document all session information in KHP’s customer management solution. 

Community Engagement  

  • Identify and engage with potential Indigenous partners, vendors, and trainers to support Kids Help Phone’s Indigenous initiatives.  
  • Engage with First Nations communities, individuals and organizations to: build awareness of KHP programs and services; listen to, and document, knowledge shared that will continuously enhance KHP programs and services. 
  • Deliver presentations to a range of adult audiences about Kids Help Phone services. 
  • Documenting all external communication in KHP’s customer management solution. 

Other  

  • Provide information and support to other departments as required, to support fundraising and reporting.  
  • Contribute to Kids Help Phone committees and support advocacy efforts 
  • Coordinate or support projects that advance Finding Hope: Kids Help Phone’s Action Plan for Supporting First Nations, Inuit, and Metis Young People 
  • Assume other duties as assigned 

Our Ideal Candidate:

  • Indigenous Knowledge of Indigenous Peoples (First Nations, Metis & Inuit) and Indigenous ways of knowing  
  • Experience working with First Nations communities, youth and Elders and allies  
  • Post-secondary education related to clinical counselling, i.e. Social Work, Counselling Psychology, etc. 
  • Experience offering counselling to children and youth individually or in groups with preference for those with experience in brief-solution focused therapy, trauma-informed counselling, client centered counselling, crisis intervention and narrative therapy  
  • Able to coordinate projects and tight deadlines in a fast paced, resource-lean environment 
  • Strong sense of professionalism, confidentiality and commitment to maintaining a safe environment for youth 
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office suite of products including Excel 
  • Must have a quiet, distraction-free environment and reliable broadband internet connection to enable effective remote work and video facilitation
