Job Title: AI Lead

Location: Remote (Cape Town Preferred, Open to Candidates Anywhere in South Africa)

Salary: Market Related

About the Role

We're looking for an AI Lead to drive cutting-edge generative AI innovation in preventative healthcare. Working directly with the founder and engineering team, you'll design, prototype, and deploy intelligent features that transform how patients and clinicians interact with healthcare systems at speed and scale.

This is a rare opportunity to lead the AI function at a high-impact, high-velocity startup already used by 30% of GP surgeries in England. You'll operate with extreme autonomy and ownership to bring powerful ideas to life fast.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the founder and engineering team to conceptualise and deliver generative AI features
  • Identify and prioritise impactful AI use cases that improve clinician and patient workflows
  • Rapidly prototype new ideas within 24 hours and iterate to live environments within the week
  • Translate complex NHS workflows into intelligent, user-friendly AI-powered tools
  • Work with real Electronic Health Record (EHR) data to create safe, scalable applications
  • Lead AI experimentation across multiple domains of preventative health
  • Build a fast-moving AI innovation engine within the company
  • Balance speed with clinical safety and risk awareness,  knowing when to accelerate or pause
  • Make generative AI tangible, practical, and safe,  not just possible

Requirements

  • PhD or Masters degree in AI, Machine Learning, or a related field with applied healthcare experience
  • Deep expertise in LLMs, prompt engineering, and generative AI development
  • Proven success in building and deploying AI tools in NHS or clinical settings
  • Able to move from idea to working prototype in a day, and to production by the end of the week
  • Highly proficient in Python, open-source LLMs, APIs, and vector database integration
  • Comfortable working with real-world, messy data and complex healthcare workflows
  • Clear, thoughtful approach to clinical safety and responsible AI design
  • A natural builder,  fast thinker, fast shipper, and energised by rapid iteration
  • Weekend builds and Monday demos don't faze you
