Job Description

Before you apply, please note:

  • This is a remote role open to candidates residing in Romania.

We’re seeking a candidate to build Platform and Application Packs used in the SmartDeploy application. Platform Packs are customized/optimized Windows device driver packs for hardware configurations offered by major hardware vendors (e.g., Lenovo, HP, Dell, Asus, etc.). Application Packs are packaged applications used with SmartDeploy.

If you believe timely work of impeccable quality and precision is substantially more important than being a ninja guru wizard rockstar working in an always-on, fast-paced matrixed environment, this job advertisement could be for you. If you also enjoy building automation that provides high-value results, this job advertisement is more likely than not for you.

PDQ provides software for System Administrators that saves them time, money, and effort. We do this through our products, PDQ Deploy, PDQ Inventory, SmartDeploy, and SimpleMDM. You will support our SmartDeploy customers by creating Platform and Application Packs consumed within the SmartDeploy product.

What You'll Be Doing

While unnecessary at this point, we encourage you to view this video for context around how you will spend a lot of your time: https://youtu.be/0vDjkSbtsmw

  • In building SmartDeploy Platform Packs, you will utilize your superlative attention to detail and commitment to technical excellence. Customers consume Platform Packs through the SmartDeploy application or as standalone driver packs. Requests for Platform Packs frequently come from email support tickets. Platform Packs are also created when high-volume vendors update existing hardware drivers or add new hardware to their PC catalog.
  • You manually go through a slew of files. For example, 120 inf files while ensuring an additional 2,000+ files exist in a single Platform Pack. There are no industry standards, and some drivers will be far more complicated and time-consuming than others.
  • Ensuring the integrity and security of the Platform Pack is the foundation of the build process. Each Platform Pack should be meticulously built and undergo a thorough QA cycle.
  • You will likely be working on updating or creating new Application Packs when not working on Platform Packs. Like it says on the tin, Application Packs package applications instead of drivers, allowing users of the SmartDeploy Client to push out silent/unattended application installations in their environment.
  • When not actively working on Platform or Application Packs:
    • Automating the Platform Pack and Application Pack process where appropriate.
    • Educating the Solutions team on Platform Packs and the build process.
    • Working with Product or Development, guiding strategic product initiatives.
    • Documenting and potentially producing videos around custom Platform Pack generation for customer education.
    • Collaborating with the PDQ Package Library owner for best practices in creating Platform and Application Packs.
Who You Are

  • Platform Packs are a critical component of SmartDeploy. While your work will essentially go unsung by the world, your contribution to thousands of system administrators will be significant. You will be improving lives by saving time and effort. This means you,
    • Have five or more years of experience in a technical role.
    • Have preferably worked in a highly regulated industry like government, healthcare, or finance and understand the necessity of following policy and procedure.
    • Have exceptional attention to detail, dedication to quality, and a drive to completion while performing a single task for an extended period.
    • Prize clean, efficient work results.
    • Have substantial experience with imaging solutions, e.g., SCCM, WDS/MDT, Ghost, Intune/Autopilot, SmartDeploy, or FOG.
    • Have extensive, expert knowledge of hardware and Windows device drivers, including hardware IDs, and utilizing WMI queries and PowerShell to elicit detailed hardware information.
    • Have worked with a diversity of hardware and vendors with various levels of technical and procedural maturity.
    • Are a seasoned Desktop Support Engineer or a System Administrator with extensive hardware experience.
    • Have exceptional troubleshooting and problem-solving skills - you're a better troubleshooter than most/all of your peers.
    • Have an appetite for learning and collaborating - You're the kind of person who, if you don't understand something, will Google it or use AI and figure it out; when you don't know something, you learn it and share it with others.
    • Possess an independent, autonomous mindset.
    • Have some QA experience. Extensive QA experience is extra credit.
