Job Opportunity: Indigenous Stewardship Planner

Employee type: Full time, Permanent

Location: Remote based in BC

Compensation:  $70,000 - $90,000/ Annually

WHAT YOU WILL DO

An Indigenous Stewardship Planner is a role that focuses on integrating Indigenous knowledge, values, and practices into land, resource, and environmental planning. This position often works within government agencies, nonprofits, or Indigenous-led organizations to support sustainable land management, cultural preservation, and ecological stewardship. The Ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of project management in the environment/forestry sector, particularly in the Indigenous engagement and assessments like Environmental Impact Assessment, Traditional and Cultural Knowledge Assessment and Indigenous Rights & Title Impact Assessment.

·         Lead and manage forestry-related projects, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and Indigenous rights.

·         Conduct forest management planning and support sustainable resource development in collaboration with Indigenous communities.

·         Oversee the execution of complex, multi-method research projects aligned with client values and expectations.

·         Collaborate with Indigenous communities to incorporate Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) into land and resource planning.

·         Develop and implement stewardship plans that align with cultural, environmental, and economic priorities.

·         Ensure compliance with legal and policy frameworks related to Indigenous land rights and environmental conservation.

·         Engage in community consultation, relationship-building, and capacity-building efforts.

·         Support conservation initiatives such as habitat restoration, biodiversity protection, and climate adaptation

·         Collaborate with community partners, team members and external consultants

·         Develop culturally appropriate project management strategies that align with indigenous values.

·         Foster a positive and inclusive workplace aligned with organizational values.

WHO YOU ARE

·         5-7 years of experience in a consulting environment within the natural resources, forestry sector or related field.

·         A degree or diploma in relevant field such as- Indigenous studies, natural resource management, land use planning, forestry or wildlife management.

·         A PMP (Project Management Professional) certification and RPF (Registered Professional Forester) designation are considered assets.

·         Knowledge of Indigenous governance, rights, and stewardship practices.

·         Experience in environmental planning, natural resource management, or land-use planning.

·         Experience working with and for indigenous communities.

·         Strong community engagement and relationship-building skills.

·         Understanding of relevant laws, treaties, and agreements affecting Indigenous lands.

·         Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, conservation groups, and Indigenous leadership.

        Working Conditions

  • Office work for design and planning tasks.
  • Travel to remote and rural communities as required.
  • A valid Driver’s License is required for community visits or field work.
