Job description

Job Title: Vice President, Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI)

Location: Remote, USA

Reports to: Senior Vice President, Coding Commercialization

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Director of Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) to lead and drive high-impact CDI initiatives within our organization. This individual contributor role requires a strong background in nursing and coding, deep expertise in CDI auditing across health systems, and a proven track record of delivering measurable improvements in CDI projects.

The ideal candidate will have a strategic mindset, be skilled in change management, and bring a technological bent of mind, leveraging predictive modeling and advanced analytics to enhance CDI outcomes. This individual should be comfortable working cross-functionally with physicians, coders, CDI specialists, and revenue cycle teams to optimize documentation practices and ensure alignment with clinical, regulatory, and financial objectives. Travel requirement: 40%.

Key Responsibilities

  1. CDI Program Leadership & Execution

Lead and execute high-impact CDI initiatives, ensuring compliance, clinical accuracy, and financial optimization.

Perform CDI audits across health systems, identifying documentation gaps, compliance risks, and revenue opportunities.

Implement change management strategies to drive the adoption of CDI best practices across teams.

Provide clinical and coding expertise to guide CDI improvements, ensuring documentation integrity and defensibility.

      2. Data Analytics & Predictive Modeling

Utilize advanced data analytics and predictive modeling to measure CDI program performance and identify improvement opportunities.

Analyze CDI metrics such as CC/MCC capture rates, case mix index (CMI), DRG accuracy, and query response rates to drive decision-making.

Develop and present data-driven reports and visual dashboards for executive leadership, illustrating CDI impact.

Leverage insights from audits and analytics to drive targeted education, training, and workflow optimization.

       3. Physician & Stakeholder Engagement

Collaborate closely with physicians, CDI teams, coders, and revenue cycle leaders to improve clinical documentation practices.

Design and deliver physician education programs, ensuring compliance with CDI best practices and regulatory updates.

Work with coding and compliance teams to resolve documentation discrepancies and ensure accurate reimbursement.

Drive strategic CDI initiatives to enhance collaboration between clinical, financial, and operational teams.

       4. Technology & Innovation in CDI

Apply new-age technologies such as predictive modeling, AI-driven CDI solutions, and NLP tools to optimize documentation workflows.

Stay ahead of emerging CDI technologies and leverage automation to improve efficiency and accuracy.

Partner with product and technology teams to enhance CDI workflows with data-driven solutions.

       5. Thought Leadership & Industry Influence

Act as a CDI subject matter expert, staying ahead of regulatory changes, payer trends, and clinical documentation guidelines.

Engage in industry forums, conferences, and professional networks, contributing to thought leadership on CDI best practices.

Develop and present whitepapers, case studies, and CDI process improvement strategies to enhance organizational impact.

Key Skills & Qualifications

Registered Nurse (RN) or Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA) background required;

Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS) preferred.

Proven experience in CDI program leadership, including conducting audits, delivering physician education, and optimizing documentation workflows.

Expertise in ICD-10, MS-DRG, HCCs, and CDI-related compliance requirements.

Demonstrated ability to drive measurable improvements in CDI KPIs, including case mix index (CMI), query rates, and severity adjustment.

Advanced data analytics, predictive modeling, and data visualization skills, with experience using Excel, SQL, Tableau, Power BI, or other BI tools.

Experience with AI, NLP, and automation technologies for CDI and healthcare documentation.

Strong strategic thinking and change management skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders and drive adoption.

Excellent presentation and communication skills, with the ability to engage and educate diverse stakeholders.

Hands-on execution mindset, able to work independently while driving cross-functional collaboration.
