About the Role

The Athletic is looking for a passionate, analytical individual with an eye for great content to join our team as a Senior Programming Editor. In this role, you’ll be responsible for curation, packaging and distribution of original content across various channels including, but not limited to, The Athletic web home page, app feeds, New York Times platforms and newsletters. The Senior Programming Editor will be an expert on content produced by our staff of 400+ national and local journalists, be an excellent copy writer, have a strong editorial sense and be expected to lead on high-level platform strategy. This role will be remote and will have night and weekend shifts.

This is a remote-based position in the United States or Canada.

Responsibilities
  • Curation and distribution of articles, live blogs and videos for multiple high-impact verticals.
  • Assist in shaping The Athletic’s short-term and long-term programming strategy across channels to drive subscribers, content views and retainment.
  • Identify appropriate content and channels to broaden The Athletic’s reach to subscriber and non-subscriber audiences.
  • Shape The Athletic’s day-to-day communication and promotion on various New York Times platforms, as well as during tentpole events.
  • Serve as a curation expert across the The Athletic's home page, in-app and on web.
  • Write and send daily push alerts for local and national stories, as well as analyze key metrics that shape programming decision-making.
  • Monitor real-time analytics (Chartbeat) and engagement metrics to inform curation and homepage/feed strategy, as well as multi-platform programming strategies for specific verticals.
  • Assist in planning and strategizing multi-platform campaigns around priority content and key events.
  • Lead discussions with editors from across the newsroom to proactively identify high-performing content, plan programming strategy across channels and provide meaningful feedback on content performance.
  • Collaborate with product, marketing, design and our newsroom to align brand and voice across all platforms.

  • Requirements
  • 3-5 years experience in journalism/media, content programming, digital marketing, or similar (sports media preferred).
  • Experience writing headlines and homepage packaging.
  • Data-driven and analytical; ability to think critically around metrics.
  • Extensive knowledge of major professional / collegiate sports (NFL, NBA, WNBA, MLB, NHL, Major global Soccer leagues, + CFB / CBB, Olympics).
  • Strong news judgment with the ability to identify the biggest stories of the day and how they relate to the larger news cycle.
  • Strong communicator and can disseminate information clearly and concisely to various stakeholder groups.
  • Experience with working as a  homepage editor at a digital news organization a plus.
  • Experience working in content programming or digital content management in the non-sports entertainment industry a plus.
  • This is a remote-based position in the United States or Canada.
  • The annual base salary range for this role is $80,000.00 - $85,000.00 USD. The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location. It may also include non-cash rewards and benefits. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
