AMC’s Research Department consists of six full-time staff that conduct scientific monitoring and assessment in a range of areas relevant to AMC’s mission, including mountain ecology, climate change, air and water quality, community science, and GIS-based landscape and trail assessments. Research staff also support other AMC staff and departments in multiple ways including providing scientific guidance to the development of AMC public policy positions, supporting AMC facilities and lands, recreation management and trail planning, and developing cartographic products and educational materials.

 

What you’ll be doing at AMC

We seek a permanent, full-time GIS Scientist who will provide a wide range of services including but not limited to:

  • Collaborate with the AMC Research department, staff in other departments, and partners to manage and analyze spatial and non-spatial data sets and make conclusions based on the data.
  • Serve as a project manager for GIS-based initiatives, such as developing interactive and static maps and conducting geospatial analysis, often working with a team of internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Design static, interactive, and digital maps using geospatial data, as well as ESRI StoryMaps that effectively communicate results and goals.
  • Administer and oversee GIS licenses club wide, as well as support AMC staff and chapter members with GIS-related issues.
  • Manage, train, and support seasonal GIS intern(s).
  • Management of spatial and non-spatial datasets.
  • Development of research publications and presenting research results in both formal and informal settings.
  • Assist with grant development, by conceptualizing grant-fundable projects, attending meetings with funders, and writing grant applications and reports.
  • Identify and lead new GIS-related research projects in the region, such as expanding programs, or developing innovative tools and approaches for advancing AMC’s conservation and recreation mission.
  • The GIS Scientist will occasionally need to travel to AMC facilities and locations across our landscape, Virginia to Maine.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

What AMC is looking for

  • MS plus at least one-year relevant experience in a natural resource-related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Strong quantitative and analytic skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and ESRI software.
  • Knowledge of R or other statistical analysis software.
  • Experience in working with large data sets, including spatial analysis and/or modeling.
  • Valid driver’s license and personal vehicle (mileage reimbursement provided).
  • Ability to work constructively with other AMC staff, volunteers, and partners.
  • Passion for conservation of the outdoors and commitment to AMC’s mission.

What AMC Can Offer You

Salary: $63,825 - $86,154

We are committed to fair compensation practices. The initial salary represents our starting point, and our compensation philosophy is designed to reward and recognize the contributions of our employees as they grow within the organization. External candidates typically begin their journey with us at the starting point of the salary range. The final compensation offer will be based on factors such as experience, education, competencies, and geographic differential relevant to the position, and will be discussed during the interview process.
