Job description

Kin is on a mission to change home insurance from what it is to what it should be. Whether we’re leveraging data to create customizable coverage or providing claims service that goes above and beyond expectations, our members are at the heart of everything we do. In the face of ever-growing climate risk, they deserve an insurance company that cares about them. We aim to stick with our members through thick and thin.

We use efficient technology that lets homeowners buy directly from us to keep costs down. This is the essence of Kin. Our approach has fostered amazing growth, attracted marquee investors, and earned us accolades, including being named to:

  • Built In Chicago's Best Places to Work, Midsize Companies (2021-2024).

  • Forbes' America's Best Startup Employers (2021- 2023).

  • Inc. 5000 Fastest-Growing Private Companies.

  • Forbes’ Fintech 50.

Simply put, our people are what make us great – we need forward-thinking, inspired game-changers like you to join us in our mission.

So, what’s the role?

As a Senior Software Engineer, CRM Integration at Kin, you’ll lead the design, development, and optimization of our CRM integrations and related systems. You’ll use your deep understanding of our CRM’s data model, APIs, and best practices to build robust solutions that unify our sales, customer service, and marketing operations.   You’ll be integrating our CRM with our core product, built on a Ruby on Rails environment with Typescript front-end and PostgreSQL database.  In your role, you will have the opportunity to work on more complex engineering problems while collaborating with peers in Dev, Product, QA, and other cross-functional teams in an agile environment. As a senior team member, you'll have the opportunity to mentor more junior engineers, and on occasion lead small projects.

A day in the life could include:

  • Driving CRM integrations: Take a leading role in architecting, designing, and optimizing integrations between our CRM and our internal systems (Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, internal APIs, etc.).

  • Setting standards: Establish best practices for scaling our CRM configuration and integration, while also guiding the engineering team in code quality, maintainability, and efficient workflows.

  • Leading collaboration: Conduct pair programming sessions and mentor team members on integrating CRM solutions with other Kin systems.

  • Owning technical design: Provide architecture oversight for CRM-related projects, ensuring they align with business goals and follow industry-leading practices.

  • Building scalable, API-first systems: Extend and maintain robust back-end services, with a particular emphasis on data flows between our CRM and Kin’s platform.

  • Participating in cross-functional collaboration: Work with our Insurance Product and Actuarial teams to ensure data integrity and effective usage of the CRM’s insights and reporting.

  • Providing subject matter expertise: Be the go-to resource for all things CRM-related, offering insight on features, upgrades, and advanced customization

I’ve got the skills… but do I have the necessary ones?

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience

  • Proven CRM expertise with hands-on experience integrating a CRM into complex back-end systems, including deep knowledge of CRM data modelS, APIs, and best practices; experience supporting a B2C company model is preferred

  • Experience coding with Ruby on Rails (or a comparable back-end framework), with willingness to blend these skills into CRM-centric projects

  • Strong understanding of SQL and RDBMS, with exposure to NoSQL a plus

  • Experience designing and implementing scalable, API-first systems

  • Familiarity with event-driven architectures

  • Ability to articulate the value of technical investments and operate with minimal guidance

  • Experience mentoring engineers and leading small projects.

  • Comfortable in a fast-paced startup environment – we’re self-motivated and determined to change the industry

  • A fast learner, ready to bring prior knowledge to this role while continuing to develop along the way

Oh, and don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!

  • Flexible PTO policy

  • Remote work

  • Generous equity package

  • 401K with company match

  • Parental leave
