The Building Performance Modeling Group (BPMG) focuses on the research, development, and deployment of building and district modeling through advancements in data analysis, physics-based modeling, and data-driven modeling.
To ensure accurate models, we consistently evaluate building program data, prioritize occupant safety, conduct techno-economic analysis, develop impactful metrics, improve data collection processes, and enhance portfolio analysis tools. We also adopt standardized data formats and create libraries to characterize and verify data accuracy. Our research plays a critical role in improving the affordability, efficiency, reliability, and security of the built environment and interconnected energy systems across the United States and the world.
This role supports the advancement of building performance modeling by leveraging the Standard Energy Efficiency Data Platform™ (SEED) for data exploration and analysis. The position focuses:
Designing and implementing extensions to existing capabilities such as the integration of EnergyShed tools to enable interdisciplinary spatial analysis for jurisdictions across the U.S.
Generate software design specifications
Interaction with external data sets using documented APIs
Geospatial software engineering using modern software stacks
Documenting and testing implemented software
Collaborating effectively with NREL researchers and external partners
Contribute towards research publications

The successful candidate will be either currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a master’s program, or enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
Demonstrated experience in software engineering, deployment, and documentation, particularly in applied problem-solving
Demonstrated experience in modern testing frameworks
Experience handling large datasets while delivering high-quality technical work with minimal supervision
Demonstrated experience developing software using modern languages including python, R, Java Script
Experience developing code that uses multiple APIs
Demonstrated experience delivering software applications to meet client requirements
Experience or familiarity with EnergyShed’s CAKE tool out of Georgia Tech
Basic knowledge of building, transportation, environmental sciences
Experience in full stack website development using Angular and Django technology stacks
Experience with GIS analysis tools and libraries, e.g. GeoPandas, gdal, QGIS
