About The Role
As a Senior Accountant on the Finance team at Apartment List, you will play a key role in building and scaling processes for a high-growth tech start-up. Apartment List is at a pivotal point in its growth where enhancing the accounting function has become an exciting opportunity for the right person.
We’re looking for an analytical and motivated person to help enhance financial reporting, implement controls, own an efficient monthly close, and be an integral part of building out the processes of a best-in-class accounting function. You will work on driving improvements in our processes while efficiently closing the books. What You’ll Do
- Work closely with the Accounting Manager to implement a faster monthly close, including innovating and developing new processes to scale with the Company
- Be responsible for month-end close cycles and applicable accounting transactions
- Own applicable business cycles and applicable accounting transactions
- Own external audit process, including preparation of deliverables, as well as communicating and confidently addressing questions of external auditors
- Identify and research technical reporting issues and drive enhancements to financial reporting
- Implement reporting and transaction controls
- Complete ad hoc projects to assist accounting function to scale
- Collaborate closely with other Accounting functions (payroll, revenue), Accounts Receivable, People Operations, and other departments
- Collaborate with the Payroll Manager and People Operations team to run payroll and ensure accurate posting of payroll-related entries in the financials
- Oversee outsourced Accounts Payable and general ledger contractors
- Work with tax providers to file corporate, sales, and other tax returns
- Partner with People Operations to manage travel software and reconcile impact in financial statements
Here are the skills and experience you’ll need to be successful:
- You have a bachelor’s or higher degree in accounting or business with an emphasis in accounting, a CPA, and 2-4 years of public accounting experience
- You have experience with various accounting cycles (payables, payroll, prepaids, fixed assets, revenue, cash) and internal controls
- You have experience with public companies, preferably in the tech world; marketplace experience would be ideal but not required
- Your Excel skills are elite
- You have experience with ERPs (Netsuite preferred) and financial reporting tools
- You’re eager, ready to innovate, and adaptable in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
- You’re a self-starter who takes the initiative, is dedicated and is ready to seize ownership of processes and projects
- Your attention to detail (with swift execution) is excellent
- You have excellent communication and people skills - Apartment List’s biggest strength is its people
- You have willingness to receive and implement feedback
- You are organized and able to clearly prioritize and manage tasks, including clear communication of status updates when needed
Pay Range
We carefully consider a variety of factors to determine compensation for each position, including the role, level, and work.
- Zone 1: $99,000 - $149,000 (including $89,000 - $134,000 base salary) + equity
- Zone 2: $92,000 - $138,000 (including $83,000 - $124,000 base salary) + equity
- Zone 3: $84,000 - $127,000 (including $76,000 - $114,000 base salary) + equity

We also rely on market indicators along with considering your work location, job related skills, experience and relevant education and training, to determine compensation that is fair and competitive for you. Apartment List will consider paying compensation near the higher of the range in exceptional circumstances, where candidates have the experience, credentials or expertise that would warrant such consideration.
