Job description

Job Summary:

We are seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Outpatient Coding & Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Trainer to lead training initiatives focused on outpatient coding accuracy, documentation quality, and regulatory compliance. This role plays a key part in equipping coders with the knowledge and tools needed to maintain high performance across a variety of outpatient specialties and provider types.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and deliver training programs focused on CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM coding for outpatient settings.
  • Integrate documentation improvement concepts into training to ensure complete and compliant code assignment.
  • Facilitate onboarding and upskilling sessions for new and existing outpatient coders.
  • Identify coding accuracy trends and collaborate with QA to provide targeted, data-driven training.
  • Translate complex clinical scenarios into practical examples for coder education.
  • Develop job aids, reference guides, and learning modules that align with current coding guidelines and payer requirements.
  • Monitor training outcomes and provide coaching or remediation as needed to ensure coder readiness and accuracy.
Qualifications:
  • Associates or Bachelors degree in Health Information Management, Nursing, or a related field preferred.
  • Active CPC (Certified Professional Coder), COC (Certified Outpatient Coder), or equivalent credential required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of outpatient coding experience, with at least 1 year in a training, quality, or documentation role.
  • Strong working knowledge of outpatient coding guidelines, specialty-specific documentation requirements, and payer coding expectations.
  • Familiarity with multiple EHR systems and encoder tools (e.g., 3M, Optum).
Preferred Skills:
  • Prior experience facilitating both live and virtual training sessions.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with an ability to simplify technical content.
  • Experience working across a range of outpatient disciplines (e.g., surgery, ED, radiology, primary care).
  • Ability to tailor training to coders of varying experience levels and learning styles.
  • Commitment to continuous education and professional development.
