Job description

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a global, nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., working to improve human health, sustainability, and resilience in the built environment through its programs and standards including LEED, the world’s most widely used green building rating system. Today, people in over 180 countries and territories live, work, and learn in LEED certified buildings, communities and cities that protect health, climate and natural resources and enhance quality of life. 

 

USGBC is currently seeking a Product Manager. This role is focused on developing and optimizing USGBC products and services, including the online education platform and global membership programs. As a Product Manager, you will lead the full product lifecycle - including development, launch, and optimization - for assigned products, driving alignment across teams and ensuring products deliver measurable value to customers and the market.  

 

Specific Responsibilities: 

Market intelligence & positioning 

  • Monitor and analyze market trends and competition to inform product design, pricing, and strategy. 
  • Develop deep customer and market insights by leveraging user research, stakeholder engagement, and competitive analysis. 
  • Create and maintain product management documentation, including target customer, value proposition, market sizing, etc. 
  • Work with customer-facing teams to develop persuasive go-to-market plans and messaging that clearly conveys the product's value to target audiences. 

Product strategy & development 

  • Own and refine the product vision and strategy to align with organizational goals, customer needs, and market opportunities. 
  • Create and manage a comprehensive product plan and roadmap. 
  • Collect, review, and prioritize customer, staff, and market requirements. 
  • Champion the voice of the customer, integrating user research, feedback, and data insights to guide product strategy. 
  • Integrate market trends into product strategy, ensuring alignment with trends in online education and non-profit membership and/or affinity programs.  

Product evaluation & optimization 

  • Continuously evaluate product performance using qualitative and quantitative data to enhance user experience, market fit, and business results. 
  • Ensure products are effectively integrated within all USGBC/GBCI business processes and systems. 
  • Align and embed membership and educational programs with USGBC and GBCI products  
  • Identify opportunities to optimize sales channels and develop sales enablement resources. 
  • Foster innovation and unique solutions across assigned products to meet market demands. 
  • Create dashboards and reporting mechanisms that deliver actionable insights. 

Collaboration & Cross-functional leadership 

  • Collaborate closely across teams to ensure alignment and execution of product strategy 
  • Foster collaboration and transparency to drive shared ownership of product success across teams. 
  • Work closely with technical and business teams to ensure product requirements are clearly defined and communicated. 
  • Engage key stakeholders to build consensus, secure buy-in, and advocate for necessary product investments. 

 

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Ability to gather and synthesize customer insights, assess market trends, and analyze competitive landscape to inform product positioning and differentiation. 
  • Ability to develop and execute product strategies and roadmaps that align with organizational objectives and customer needs.  
  • Capacity to engage and build consensus across various levels of leadership in a matrixed organization through collaboration and influence  
  • Demonstrates a proactive, self-motivated approach with a strong sense of ownership and accountability 
  • Demonstrates urgency and follow-through in driving product initiatives from concept to execution. 
  • Ability to take initiative, anticipate challenges, and move forward decisively, even in ambiguous situations. 
  • Familiarity with association/non-profit membership or similar engagement networks  
  • Experience growing educational offerings and membership, subscription, or other affinity groups 
  • Experience working with international stakeholders or partners in membership and/or education 
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.  
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.  

 

Education and Training Requirements: 

  • Bachelor's degree 
  • 3+ years of relevant product management experience 
  • Familiarity with USGBC and GBCI mission and stakeholders 
  • Demonstrated skills with Microsoft tools and one or more project/product management systems (e.g., JIRA, Notion, Smartsheet, etc.) 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Advanced degree 
  • 5-7 years of relevant professional experience in sustainability education, non-profit administration, membership, or equivalent areas.  
  • Knowledge of USGBC’s suite of certification programs, including LEED   
  • Familiarity with public and private sector stakeholders in the green building industry 
  • LEED GA and/or LEED AP accreditation

 

 Details:

  • Full Time, permanent, salaried, benefits-eligible, exempt status
  • Location: 2101 L Street NW, Washington, DC or remote 
  • Hours: Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:30 pm EST, 40 hours per week, including occasional evenings and weekends
  • Travel – upon request and approval
