Job description

About the Company

Valon’s mission is to empower every homeowner. We believe the journey of home ownership starts when you get your keys, but lasts far beyond. We’re creating a world where home ownership comes with ease, security, and financial know-how. Our growing team of engineers, operators, product enthusiasts, and experienced servicing professionals are leveraging technology to fundamentally improve the homeownership experience. Through mortgage servicing—the process of paying off one’s mortgage—Valon is taking the first step in transforming the industry one homeowner, and lender, at a time.

Analytics at Valon

The Analytics team works on all things data. We are a team of full-stack analysts who own everything from data transformation, experimentation, KPI definition, and data analyses.  We work closely with Product, BizOps and operations to ensure teams have the right data to do things like solve business problems, understand how users interact with our product, and evaluate the success of product launches. n We use Bigquery, DBT, Looker, and Hex as our tech stack.

About the Role

We are looking for an exceptional analytics leader who can build out a dedicated analytics function and ecosystem within our operating company, Valon Mortgage. You and the team you build will be responsible for developing our reporting, generating insights, creating data products, supporting our data infrastructure, and more, building on top of the foundation that has been laid by our parent company’s analytics team. You will be a key partner to and peer of our senior operational executives across our Servicing and Lending divisions, and you’ll serve as the authority on the key metrics that drive our business. The right candidate is analytical, works well under changing circumstances, and has a good mix of technical skills and business intuition to not just serve up analytics but be a driver of positive change throughout the company. Depending on the candidate, this role could expand to oversee our business analysis, IT, and business systems management functions. Since this is a new team, it is anticipated that this role will entail a meaningful amount of IC work while you hire a team.

Responsibilities
  • Build and lead the Valon Mortgage Analytics team, responsible for:
    • Owning our data infrastructure and tool chain
    • Identifying relevant KPIs and SLAs that reflect client and regulatory requirements, operational health, and company objectives
    • Developing operational dashboarding, metrics, alerting, and controls
    • Orchestrating performance analytics throughout the organization, including developing management frameworks and partnering with teams to conduct time studies and set goals.
    • Managing headcount models and contributing relevant metrics for strategic planning
    • Supporting client, regulatory, and investor reporting
    • Building automation tooling and light / scrappy development work
    • Owning operations requiring substantial data manipulation
    • Supporting all other analytics needs
  • Able to operate at the multiple levels required for the role: start as an analytics IC while ramping and building a team, evolve into a player-coach, and finally move to full time manager who is capable of overseeing VM's analytics/data strategy.
  • Develop deep knowledge of and expertise in the data available across all areas of the business and its relevance.
  • Empower operational leaders to understand business performance, make effective decisions, and identify root cause results.
  • Other duties as assigned
Ideal Background
  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field, such as statistics, computer science, data science, or mathematics
  • 10+ years of full-time work experience in data analytics or business intelligence, ideally at a mortgage servicer or bank

  • Expertise in Google Sheets and/or Microsoft Excel
  • Deep understanding of how to effectively present data insights to the target operational audience through applicable visualization tools
  • Ability to solve problems independently and build processes around situations that have not been encountered before
  • Strong business intuition, with the ability to understand business strategy and the operational and financial implications of the story the data is telling.
  • Proactive in anticipating the needs of partner teams, deriving data insights, and identifying operational improvements. This is not a passive “order taker” role.
  • Eager to play a key role in a transformative company that is changing a major industry
