Responsibilities:
GENERAL SUMMARY
With direction and some latitude for independent judgment, provides administrative assistance to Addiction Psychiatry Clinical leadership coordinates clinical activities and supervision of clinical and intake staff of a clinic in Addiction Psychiatry Service (APS). Subscribes to the Department’s goal of creating a culturally competent environment by treating patients, patient’s families, trainees, research subjects and co-workers in a sensitive and caring manner with appropriate attention to cultural differences. Participates in available cultural competence events and training. Carries out responsibilities with considerable latitude for independent judgment. Fosters and enables a positive work environment by modeling the I CARE values.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Supervision
- Directly supervises clinical staff in assigned clinic, including orientation of new staff.
- Supervises the development and implementation of specific chemical dependency treatment goals for all patients in assigned clinic.
- Monitors implementation of policies and procedures in assigned clinic.
- Makes hiring and termination decisions regarding clinical staff.
- Serves as primary consultant to other direct service clinical staff.
- Sets the tone for an integrated approach to the treatment of patients who have both mental illness and chemical dependency.
- Coordinates urgent care, access to treatment, special arrangements and complicated cases’ needs.
- Provides direct clinical care and plays a leadership role in the clinical teams, providing a mixture of intake assessments, and individual, group and family treatment, according to individual interest and program needs.
- Designs appropriate therapeutic treatment plans with clearly defined treatment goals and follows through with the course of treatment.
- Assesses successful completion of treatment goals and plans termination of therapy accordingly.
- Completes and maintains patient charts, and other required documentation of services rendered.
- Communicates with referral sources, including legal and criminal justice representatives, at critical points in treatment.
- Mobilizes family and natural support networks when necessary and assumes a leadership role in the multidisciplinary team approach to treatment, case management, training, and community interventions.
Program Monitoring and Reporting
- Prepares, tracks, and plans for changes in census and patient services in assigned clinic.
- Maintains a working knowledge of Finger Lakes Region substance use treatment services, self-help groups, and other services, and referral for these programs.
- Ensures that clinical staff members maintain competency in relevant areas of substance use and mental health treatment, and maintains knowledge of referral sources, and eligibility and treatment requirements for other facilities.
- Performs chart auditing and coordinates incident reporting procedures.
- Coordinates program evaluation/Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement activities including incident reviews with Clinical Coordinator and Quality Assurance Administrator.
- Maintains active case records including written treatment plans, problem- oriented progress notes, periodic updates of treatment plans, and appropriate documentation of incidents, discharge summaries, interagency communications, and correspondence.
- Establishes communication using established rules of confidentiality and laws concerning rights of patients, and uses correspondence with family, other health-related agencies, employers, criminal justice programs, and social service status.
- Provides senior clinical staff with this data for incorporation into diagnostic team assessment of the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs of the patients and their families.
- Ensures effective liaison with other program components Addiction Psychiatry.
Leadership and Staff Development
- Represents assigned clinic on Department of Psychiatry committees as assigned.
- Represents assigned clinic within the Department of Psychiatry, to achieve effective liaison with other programs in the Department and continuity of care for patients who may be in more than one program within the Department of Psychiatry.
- As directed by the Clinic Director, the Clinical Supervisor may represent department to outside agencies, including county and other governmental agencies.
- Participates in program staff development and informational activities including:
- Maintains continuing education in knowledge and skills affecting the discipline of chemical dependency counseling, and OD treatment, including attendance at in-service meetings.
- Provides on-site teaching to multi-disciplinary students observing program components and therapy.
- May give lectures/talks on specific topics to patients, and their families.
- Reports to clinical supervisor regularly for supervision of all clinical activity.
- Regular program staff/team meetings to review policy, and procedures as well as conduct case reviews.
Customer Satisfaction
- Assures I CARE values are demonstrated by all staff at all times.
- Acts as an excellent representative of the unit at departmental, service and institutional meetings.
- Serves as point person for the management of patient complaints regarding front end operations and in this role, serves as a front-line problem solver.
- Answers correspondence and other inquiries involving the interpretation of university as well as departmental policy, regulations, procedures, etc.; guides subordinates on replies to routine correspondence.
- Acts as a liaison with physicians, staff and with other community health, social and government agencies.
- Develops and plans coordination of training programs/conferences for staff.
- Plans and establishes meetings, conference symposia etc., and coordinates the arrangements and preparation of program literature, brochures and other materials.
- Handles time sensitive confidential information, direct communication with Addiction Psychiatry Chiefs and Leadership
Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to:
- Toxicology screen monitoring
- Assess patients for physical, behavioral signs of drug/alcohol use and perform BAC tests as needed.
- Assist staff in assessing patient’s acting-out behavior and develop a plan of action to help maintain the safety of other patients and staff in clinic.
MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Master's degree in a discipline related to health and human services required.
- 5 years related of combined clinical and/or supervisory experience, including both substances use disorders treatment experience and/or specific co-occurring disorders treatment experience required.
- NYS Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) or (CASAC-T) required If CASAC-T upon hire, successful completion of examination to remove the (T (training)) designation must be completed within 12 months of hire required.
- Addiction treatment Counseling theories and techniques preferred.
- Clinical writing. Health and human services resources preferred.
