This is a remote position.

Are you an experienced mechanical commissioning professional with proven expertise in liquid cooling systems, process piping, and water treatment? DLB Associates is seeking a senior specialist who has led complex commissioning efforts in critical environments such as data centers, semiconductor plants, or pharmaceutical facilities. This is a travel-intensive role—approximately 75% on-site at client locations across the U.S. and internationally—where your technical leadership will be essential to delivering high-performance mechanical systems.

Position Title: Mechanical Commissioning Senior Specialist – Liquid Cooling Systems
Position Location: Candidate must be located near a major airport. Up to 75% domestic travel; relocation may be considered for long-term project needs.

Job Summary
The Mechanical Commissioning Senior Specialist is responsible for providing technical support and leadership in the commissioning of complex mechanical systems in critical environments, such as data centers. This individual will support the planning, scheduling, and execution of commissioning for systems that require advanced understanding of process piping, water treatment, and cooling technologies.

The role requires collaboration with engineers, contractors, equipment vendors, and client teams to test, validate, and make operational newly installed mechanical systems in high-demand facilities. The ideal candidate will have experience in similar industries such as pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, or industrial sectors, with a strong background in commissioning complex mechanical systems.

This position involves leading commissioning projects of a complex scope, managing project teams, and ensuring high-quality standards for system operations. The Mechanical Commissioning Senior Specialist will work remotely with significant travel to client sites across the United States and internationally, as necessary.

Essential Functions
On-site Commissioning Activities and Project Management (50%)
  • Conduct on-site inspection, validation, functional testing, verification, and troubleshooting of mechanical and controls equipment, with a focus on process piping, cooling systems, and water treatment.
  • Participate in factory witness testing and startup activities for cooling-related systems.
  • Use technical equipment to perform testing, ensuring systems meet operational requirements.
  • Direct vendors/contractors in executing testing activities.
  • Develop proposals including project scope, schedule, and budget; seek supervisory input as needed.
  • Manage project site teams, including resource forecasting, coordination, and timely updates.
  • Identify potential project risks and develop mitigation strategies to control deviations from budget or deadlines.
  • Serve as the primary site contact for clients, building long-term relationships.

Testing Plans and Procedures for Complex Projects (20%)
  • Develop comprehensive commissioning plans for mechanical systems in critical facilities.
  • Prepare pre-functional checklists and functional performance test scripts for complex systems.

Review of Construction Documents (15%)
  • Review design documents, drawings, and specifications related to mechanical systems, including water treatment and cooling systems.
  • Lead commissioning-focused design reviews, ensuring alignment with client needs.

Reporting (15%)
  • Oversee all project communication, including progress reports for stakeholders.
  • Prepare and deliver final commissioning reports to clients, ensuring compliance with agreed-upon specifications and timelines.
  • Track personal and team hours for project management purposes.
Completion of Assigned Tasks and Deliverables on Time and on Budget
Performs Other Related Duties as Assigned


Requirements
Experience and Knowledge:
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical and control systems, specifically related to process piping and water treatment technologies.
  • Previous experience with commissioning complex mechanical systems, ideally within data center, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, industrial, or similar high-stakes environments.
  • Skilled in MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams), with exceptional organizational skills for file management.
  • Proficiency in utilizing AI and emerging technologies to optimize workflows and drive operational improvements.
Work Environment and Independence:
  • Ability to work successfully in a remote environment with effective communication, organizational skills, self-motivation, and resourcefulness.
  • Capability to work under moderate supervision, contributing to team goals while also managing independent tasks.
Technical and Safety Skills:
  • Ability to follow site-specific safety protocols and comply with industry standards.
  • Certification in NFPA70E and/or OSHA is preferred.
Communication Skills:
  • Effective communication of both technical and non-technical information, including client-facing interactions.
  • Ability to build effective relationships and communicate complex information clearly.
Physical Demands:
  • Frequent manipulation of tools and equipment, including lifting or moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, on ladders, and in varying environmental conditions (e.g., temperature extremes).
  • Travel to client sites, including some locations with challenging work environments.
Travel / Relocation Requirements:
  • Up to 75%, this may include travel to any or all 50 US states
  • Must be located near a major airport. 
  • Effective May 7, 2025, and in accordance with U.S. federal regulations for domestic air travel, a valid REAL ID (or an acceptable alternative, such as a passport) is required for travel associated with this position.
  • Travel may involve transportation by car or plane depending on the destination and nature of the business need.
  • Travel is defined as physically leaving home on behalf of business activities including but not limited to client sites, meetings with other employees, meeting for business development purposes, running errands on behalf of the business, attending industry conferences, etc.
  • Potential relocation opportunities may exist per project needs
  • International travel may be required based on individual skill, training and project needs

Education / Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction, or a related discipline
OR
  • At least two years of hands-on experience with installation, testing, validation, and troubleshooting of mechanical systems
Plus
  • A minimum of eight years of additional experience in a relevant field (e.g., process piping, water treatment, industrial cooling systems).
