Job description

The Senior Internet Investigator is primarily responsible for conducting detailed anti-piracy investigations of key operators and global targets involved in copyright infringement, including the investigation of individuals and organizations. 

Candidates must have detailed skills in OSINT and attribution methods, including social media research. An advanced work ethic and creative problem-solving skills, including the ability to work well with minimal supervision and guidance, are essential. 

The ideal candidate should demonstrate a passion for inspiring and collaborating with their team amidst shifting priorities, be a self-starter with a bias toward action, and be able to continually develop their team’s skills and abilities. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct complex global and local investigations of key players and other targets; notably the development and execution of an investigative plan to identify entities engaging in copyright infringement.
  • Document investigative actions to ensure all steps are captured in an organized case file.
  • Present, both orally and in writing, well-reasoned and comprehensive final Investigative Reports to MPA management, legal teams, member studios, and external stakeholders including law enforcement. 
  • Be familiar with relevant law enforcement processes and procedures to support criminal referral strategies for relevant investigations. 
  • Assist MPA management in maintaining regular liaison with law enforcement, government entities, and private sector organizations. 
  • Stay abreast of content protection developments and manage enforcement actions where desirable. 
  • Provide guidance and support to junior investigators.
  • Communicate and collaborate regularly with MPA attorneys.
  • Proactively detect and analyze new potential targets.
  • Any other tasks assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a technical area of study (Computer Science, Network Engineering, Information Technology, Information Security) or a degree plus technical experience.
  • 5+ years of investigative or analytical experience
  • Experience in conducting technical and non-technical online investigations with a focus on attribution through OSINT techniques.
  • Experience conducting technical Internet investigations with a preference for investigations related to websites involving direct download, streaming video and peer-to-peer protocols. Experience in related fields such as online advertising or follow-the-money.
  • Strong working knowledge of the relationships between ISPs, domain names, WHOIS, IP addresses, hosting providers, and internet governance overall.
  • Familiar with investigative tools such as WHOIS, (reverse) DNS lookups, traceroute and packet capture analysis etc.
  • Ability to communicate with users of all levels of experience; to work creatively, quickly, and effectively to produce results amidst shifting priorities.
  • Creative problem-solving skills, including the ability to work well with minimal supervision and guidance.
  • Must possess the highest level of work ethic and integrity, with the ability to maintain confidential information. 
  • Experience building relationships with cross-functional departments.
  • Experience drafting and editing reports and assembling presentations. 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload and manage competing priorities and deadlines in a timely, efficient, and productive manner.
  • Ability to display sound judgment, critical thinking, and strong attention to detail. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10+ years of equivalent investigative or analytic experience
  • Advanced degree or professional certifications related to the job responsibilities listed above 
  • Coding experience
  • Strong understanding of the steps in building and operating a website, including the ability to understand source code 
  • Understanding how mobile apps work
  • Experience in cross-border investigations involving multiple jurisdictions.
  • Experience working technical investigations, particularly investigations involving intellectual property theft.
  • Knowledge of legal and illegal online content distribution methods, including streaming video, online file hosting, and peer-to-peer file sharing.
  • Basic understanding of computer crimes statutes.
