Job description

fern is a fast growing, European YouTube channel, known for its beautifully crafted video essays and documentaries that unravel the complex threads of our world — from power and politics to science, technology, and shifting cultural landscapes. Our content is well-researched visually rich, and globally accessible, reaching millions of curious minds who want more than just headlines.

Now, we’re searching for a distinctive Voice-Over Artist to help bring our stories to life.

This isn’t just about reading scripts — it’s about inhabiting them. We’re looking for someone who can deliver narration with depth, clarity, humour and emotional insight — someone who understands pacing, can hold attention without demanding it, and knows how to let ideas breathe.

If you can bring depth, warmth, and intelligence to topics that span the globe and challenge the mind—let’s talk.

Tasks

  • Record voice-over for scripted video essays (1–2 videos/month initially, with potential for more)

  • Bring a consistent tone and personality to the channel’s voice

  • Help shape the long-term sound identity of fern, one that audiences recognise and trust

  • Collaborate with producers to ensure the narration enhances the pacing, tone, and clarity of each story

Requirements

  • Male or female applicants welcome

  • Fluent English speaker, - a Nordic accent is a bonus

  • A voice that is unique, memorable, and clearly not AI-generated

  • A tone that feels natural, raw, and emotionally in tune, not overly theatrical or stiff. We are not looking for a “radio” or “commercial” voice. We are journalists and our work should sound like journalism.

  • Someone with a genuine interest in the kinds of topics fern covers, such as politics, society, history, and culture

  • Comfort reading long-form, essay-style scripts with clarity and subtlety

  • Willingness to commit to a regular schedule: approx. 60–90 minutes of VO recording per video

  • Being able to deliver clean finished audio tracks would be beneficial

  • Ability to identify clunky lines or factual issues in scripts

Nice to Haves

  • A quiet and appropriate space for recording

  • Access to your own audio equipment (microphone, interface, etc.)

  • Background or strong interest in journalism, social science, or global affairs is helpful for creative collaboration in the future

Benefits

  • Flexible workplace

  • Flexible working hours and flexible employment arrangements

  • Competitive compensation (depending on skills and work experience)

  • Variety of projects and creative work in a young, growing team

  • Regular team events in Amsterdam

  • Working on important journalistic content and documentaries

  • A voice sample of the following trial section:

“Lincoln, Montana, 1996.

This cabin is the chosen home of Theodore J. Kaczynski - more commonly known as the Unabomber.

He’s long been feared as America’s smartest criminal. A serial bomber who’s killed and wounded targets across the country, with no clear connection.

For 17 years he’s eluded the FBI. It’s the largest, most expensive manhunt in the bureau’s history. He’s the evil genius they simply can’t catch. Likely history’s most intellectual serial killer. He terrorized the nation, instilling fear in Americans about opening their mail, and getting on planes.

And he did it all from his cabin.

Here is where he built his bombs, where he wrote his manifesto, and where he evaded capture for nearly two decades. It’s where he turned from off-the-grid recluse to world-famous murderer.

This cabin contains all the evidence the FBI will need to convict him.

It’s located deep in the Montana wilderness.

Back in 1969, Ted moved here from California, where he left behind a shining career as a math professor at UC Berkeley.

He wanted to get closer to nature - and far, far away from everyone who pisses him off. Which is most people.

He built this cabin with his brother – back when Ted still talked to him. It’s got no electricity, no plumbing. Just a wood stove, a bed, and a whole lot of books.

Right now, Ted is building another bomb. They’re meticulously crafted, and he’s continuously improving his technique. Every year they become more lethal.

In fact he’s got another one under his bed, wrapped and ready to go. But he won’t get a chance to send it. Because despite his intellect… he made some pretty dumb mistakes.”

  • Please upload your voice sample to Google Drive or a similar platform, and share the link in the 'Questions' section of the form. (Applications without a sample of the above will not be considered)

  • A short cover letter or paragraph introducing yourself and your interest in the role

  • Any relevant experience, demo reels, or social media links
