Job description

This is a remote position.

For a project in the field of mainframe modernisation, we are currently seeking an experienced expert in the Integrated Database Management System (IDMS) – ideally with hands-on experience in migrations to relational database systems (RDBMS). This role is part of a multi-year transformation programme and will be central to driving the architectural evolution of legacy database systems into modern, scalable platforms.

This is a 12-month freelance contract, remote, with a respected client based in Germany. Starting immediately, the role offers the opportunity to join at a senior level mainframe modernisation programme. The project is currently in its preparation and pitch phase, giving you a chance to shape a multi-year transformation from the ground up. All work is conducted in English, and the programme offers strong potential for long-term extension and continued technical leadership. English is the only language requirement.

Key Responsibilities:

Manage and optimise legacy IDMS environments to ensure operational stability
Design and implement robust migration strategies from IDMS to RDBMS (e.g., Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL)
Build and manage ETL processes to support clean and efficient data migration
Partner with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment of migration activities with overall programme goals
Conduct performance analysis and post-migration tuning
Maintain detailed documentation of all migration processes and architecture decisions
