WeVote has an open volunteering position for a Grant Researcher  (2-5 hours per week) who wants to use their existing skills and learn new skills, while helping strengthen American Democracy. This position will identify potential funding opportunities from foundations, corporate giving programs, and philanthropic institutions. This role is essential to expanding our funding pipeline and helping us connect with grantmakers who support civic engagement, voter education, digital democracy, and tech-for-good initiatives.

About Us

WeVote is a nonpartisan get-out-the-vote nonprofit startup, and a celebrated Fast Forward nonprofit technology grantee. WeVote is a movement of over 60 passionate volunteers (starting with the founders) who are building open source mobile technologies that touch and mobilize millions of voters on Election Day. We observe that many voters are busy, distracted, and impatient. We have a goal of providing a complete voting experience in 8 minutes, including the download of our app ("WeVote Ballot Guide, @WeVote"). More information is at https://WeVote.US. See Twitter @WeVote. We are a 100% remote organization.

What You’ll Do

  • Conduct in-depth research on foundations, corporations, and institutional funders whose priorities align with WeVote’s mission.
  • Use tools like Candid/GrantStation, Guidestar, and other grant databases to source opportunities.
  • Monitor philanthropic news and newsletters to track open calls for proposals and funding trends.
  • Develop concise profiles on each potential funder, including giving history, strategic priorities, eligibility criteria, average grant size, deadlines, and key contacts.
  • Work with the Donor Relations Project Manager to maintain a centralized, up-to-date tracker with all prospects, including stage of outreach, status, and relevant notes.
  • Prioritize funders based on alignment, readiness, and competitiveness.
  • Recommend timelines for applications and potential strategies for relationship cultivation.
  • Work closely with the Donor Relations Team to align research with organizational priorities and upcoming funding needs.

Who you are: Must haves.

  • At least 2 hours each week during our core team hours M-F 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. (Additional hours can be done in evening and weekends)
  • You want to work with an established and successful team. You are committed to strengthening American Democracy.
  • You are striving for personal excellence.
  • A willingness to work with and support other volunteers
  • You are currently located in the US and can work one or two hours that overlap with US PT per week.

Not required, but nice to have.

  • Assist in drafting LOIs or templated application responses.

  • Attend foundation webinars or informational sessions as needed.

  • If you have more than 2 hours to volunteer each week, there are other ways you can get involved with WeVote

What You’ll Gain

You will have the opportunity to touch the lives of millions of Americans, and be part of a movement and product that will receive national attention. You’ll gain an opportunity to grow within the WeVote movement and meet other volunteers who are like minded and interested in building a valuable application to empower voters across the United States. You’ll also gain valuable technical skills, have opportunities for leadership development, and expand your personal and professional network.
