What you will be doing in the role of a National Director, Donor Experience

The National Director, Donor Experience, is a key leadership role within Susan G. Komen’s Major Gift and Planned Giving team. This position is responsible for growing and managing a high-performing national mid-level and major gift donor program, while driving the national stewardship strategy and exceeding annual revenue goals.

The Director oversees a blended personal portfolio valued at $1M+ and leads a team of four Donor Experience Officers (DXOs) responsible for cultivating approximately $6M in total revenue. This role focuses on deepening donor relationships, expanding monthly giving strategies, and leveraging data insights to strengthen the donor journey across all channels. The position also supports foundation engagement, qualification of major donor prospects, and seamless collaboration with development staff nationally.

What you will bring to the table 

  • Manage a portfolio of mid-to-major donors and prospects, with annual revenue responsibility of $1M+.
  • Cultivate, steward, and solicit donors through intentional Moves Management strategies focused on retention and upgrade.
  • Train and manage the DXO team to ensure each donor in their portfolios receives personal, high-touch engagement at least once per quarter.
  • Ensure timely and effective stewardship for all gifts in the portfolio, utilizing a variety of communication channels (email, phone, mail, digital).
  • Train, coach, and mentor the Donor Experience Officer team in individual giving best practices, donor qualification, and strategic outreach.
  • Lead the execution of a national stewardship strategy for unassigned donors giving $250–$10,000.
  • Ensure team use of Salesforce and other technologies for accurate tracking of moves, metrics, and KPIs.
  • Analyze giving trends and portfolio performance using Salesforce and other analytics tools to inform strategy and improve ROI.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to build and refine dashboards in Salesforce for donor engagement and revenue tracking.
  • Utilize donor segmentation strategies and insights to tailor engagement efforts.
  • Develop and execute strategies to uncover new monthly sustaining donors, and steward existing sustaining donors.
  • Work closely with Marketing and Digital teams to enhance donor experience and communication for recurring gift programs.
  • Integrate sustaining giving efforts into the broader stewardship and cultivation strategy to increase donor lifetime value.
  • Partner with the VP to identify, qualify, and cultivate major gift and foundation prospects for long-term engagement.
  • Collaborate on proposal development, impact reporting, and donor recognition plans.
  • Make strategic introductions for high-value donor relationships identified through team efforts.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of Susan G. Komen’s mission, programs, and fundraising priorities to inform donor engagement strategies.
  • Contribute to the overall goals of the Major Gift and Planned Giving department, supporting
  • Serve as a thought partner to leadership, providing insights and recommendations to evolve and innovate the donor experience.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the mission and success of Susan G. Komen.
  • Supervises the work of others, including planning, assigning, scheduling and reviewing work, ensuring quality standards for the Donor Experience Officers team.

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or CFRE certification strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 7–10 years of progressive experience in individual and institutional fundraising, with a successful track record in major gifts, foundation engagement, and mid-level giving.
  • Proven ability to personally manage a donor portfolio with revenue exceeding $1M annually.
  • Demonstrated success in coaching and managing high-performing fundraisers, driving accountability, and fostering professional development to exceed performance metrics.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and fundraising analytics, apply insights to donor strategy, and coach others in data-informed decision-making.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with strong time management and ability to maintain accurate and timely documentation of donor activity in a CRM.
  • Proficient in Salesforce or comparable donor management systems, with experience building dashboards and reporting tools. Familiarity with platforms such as Gravyty, FreeWill, Asana, or similar is a plus.
  • Technologically fluent, with strong skills in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, and Teams. Must be capable of training others in CRM and digital engagement tools.
  • Exceptional relationship-building and interpersonal communication skills; able to connect with donors and team members across channels—in person, video, phone, and email—with empathy and professionalism.
  • Self-directed and intrinsically motivated; thrives in a remote work environment with minimal supervision while maintaining focus on results and team collaboration.
  • Flexible and solutions-oriented; adept at navigating changing priorities, donor expectations, and organizational goals in a fast-paced setting.

  • Ability to work well across the organization with employees of all levels and in all departments.
  • Strong Salesforce, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and SharePoint skills.
