Position Summary:

The Associate Director, Business Development, Drug Discovery, within the Genomic Access Business Unit (BU) is responsible for sourcing, creating, and operating strategic business relationships with select partners within novel areas including but not limited to early genetically driven target discovery, data partnerships, software, and bioinformatics. The candidate should have experience in managing strategic drug discovery deals from inception to closure and have established relationships with biopharma companies to facilitate deal and funnel activity. The responsibilities include sourcing, creating, and managing strategic business relationships with selected partners within the biopharma sector. This role requires a thorough understanding of genetics within the biopharmaceutical industry, particularly in drug target discovery, and involves overseeing the entire deal process, from sourcing and executing strategic deals to leading engagement on select initiatives post-deal execution.  Additionally, targeted support for large-scale genomics programs may be required.  This role is essential to supporting growth in the new Genomic Access BU within Illumina.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead business development activities by leveraging genomic data (population-scale sequencing, multi-omics, perturb-seq) into new revenue streams.

  • Identify and execute on potential revenue opportunities in AI, genomics, and drug discovery, based on Illumina's unique data generation capabilities.

  • Develop and refine the strategic roadmap for our genomics and target discovery services using large scale human genetics and genomics datasets.

  • Interface closely with Illumina's multidisciplinary R&D team of experimental and computational scientists to align business strategy with scientific advancements.

  • Managing deal flow / deal funnel end-to-end; negotiating business opportunities, partnerships, collaborations, and other related opportunities through to deal execution, while creating effective deal structures.

  • Support the drafting and negotiations of business development related agreements and other commercial agreements.

  • Presenting business plans, pitches, company objectives, and business model proposals to internal and external customers, including executives.

  • Interface, liaise with, and influence cross functional Illumina team members such as finance, marketing, legal, sales, manufacturing, and R&D.

  • Provide mentorship to others (functional expertise/knowledge), which may grow in scope to managing others (broad management).

  • This position does require flexibility to travel, with willingness to travel internationally (up to 30%)

Requirements:

  • Proven ability to evaluate and creatively solve complex problems and the strategic implications of different business approaches.

  • Have general knowledge and understanding of early drug discovery and development within the biopharma R&D market.

  • Enjoys and thrives in a team environment, with operational capabilities to drive internal and external teams forward to achieve objectives.

  • Effectively communicates with and coordinates cross-functional stakeholders (technical, medical, product development, legal, commercial and others) to achieve desired results.

  • Results-oriented with the ability and desire to effectively manage workstreams (deal flow, post-deal work) from start to finish both in time and with desired outcomes.

  • Excels in external facing roles with executives, with experience of exhibiting executive presence in prior roles.

  • Excellent financial modeling, analytical, communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex information to diverse audiences.

  • Will have developed key relationships with important potential customers and suppliers, to source future business.

  • Will bring to the table novel opportunities for potential new business generation.

  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills required.

  • Highly self-motivated.

  • Must be very detail oriented.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office tools required.

Experience/Education:

  • 10+ years relevant work experience required in business development with a track record of deal and revenue performance

  • Bachelor’s degree is required; engineering, operations, or relevant scientific background preferred; MBA is preferred

  • PhD in Genetics, Molecular Biology, or a related life sciences field is preferred.

  • Desire for candidates with understanding of software, bioinformatics, data, and biopharmaceutical businesses, in addition to sequencing.

  • Previous experience in consultative/services sales is a plus

The estimated base salary range for the Associate Director, Business Development, Genomic Access - AI, Genomics & Drug Discovery role based in the United States of America is: $167,200 - $250,800. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
