Overview
The Controller will play a key role in maintaining the financial health of the company by assisting in the management of accounting and financial operations. This position involves overseeing day-to-day financial activities, ensuring compliance with accounting standards and regulations, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to support the company's financial objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting and Analysis:
Prepare accurate and timely financial statements including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.
Conduct financial analysis, variance analysis, and provide insight to support decision-making by senior management.
Assist in the development of financial reports and dashboards for monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs).
Accounting Operations
Supervise and review the work of the accounting team, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger activities.
Ensure adherence to accounting principles, policies, and procedures.
Oversee the month-end and year-end close processes to ensure accuracy and completeness of financial records.
Taxation Canada (experience with US taxation is considered an asset).
Financial Controls And Compliance
Assist in the establishment and maintenance of internal controls to safeguard company assets and maintain the integrity of financial data.
Ensure compliance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), tax regulations, and other financial reporting requirements.
Assist with external audits, including providing necessary documentation and addressing audit inquiries.
Budgeting And Forecasting
Collaborate with the finance team to support the annual budgeting process.
Assist in the development of financial forecasts and projections.
Monitor budget performance and provide recommendations for adjustments as needed.
Process Improvement
Identify opportunities for process improvements and efficiencies within the finance department.
Participate in the implementation of new financial systems or tools to enhance productivity and accuracy.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with other departments, including procurement, operations, and sales, to ensure alignment on financial goals and reporting requirements.
Collaborate with external stakeholders, such as auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory agencies, as needed.
Training And Development
Mentor and develop finance team members to enhance their skills and knowledge.
Stay current with accounting and financial industry trends and regulations and share insights with the team.
Additional responsibilities and special projects to be provided on an ongoing basis.
Knowledge And Skills
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Detail-oriented with a high degree of accuracy in financial data analysis and reporting.
Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
Ability to work collaboratively in a team and lead by example.
Education/Experience
Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or a related field; CPA certification is required.
7 years of progressive experience in accounting and finance roles.
At least 2 years of manufacturing experience is required.
Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial regulations, and reporting standards. Experience with USA GAAP is preferred.
Proficiency in financial software and systems including Quickbooks online (e.g., ERP, Excel).
