Firm Risk Management

Firm Risk Management (FRM) supports Morgan Stanley to achieve its business goals by partnering with business units across the Firm to realize efficient risk-adjusted returns, acting as a strategic advisor to the Board and protecting the Firm from exposure to losses as a result of credit, market, liquidity, model and other risks.

Background on the Position

Fixed Income Secured Lending (FSL) Real Estate teams in Credit Risk is looking to hire an experienced valuation team member. The primary responsibility for this individual is as a member of a global FSL valuation team to conduct valuation due diligence on and monitoring of real estate loans pledged as collateral to secure revolving and portfolio financing transactions. The FSL valuation team provides an independent view on the real estate backing the collateral loans through market research, review of valuations provided as part of collateral loan pledges, and monitoring real estate markets. The underlying properties securing the collateral loans may be commercial real estate (all property types), data centers and residential real estate globally.

Responsibilities Include

  • Administer the collateral loan appraisal review process and in consultation with the Team Lead opine on the reliability of the appraisal by ensuring assumptions are supported and reasonable;
  • Ensure compliance of the collateral loan appraisal with Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP), FIRREA, and internal policies;
  • Determine if market values have become challenged and make recommendations to the Global Head of Credit for FSL regarding updating valuations for underlying properties;
  • Develop processes and procedures to create efficiencies and improvements to monitor market activity;
  • Manage vendor relationships as a part of the review process.
  • Develop forms and tools to streamline processes and create efficiencies in managing appraisal review process for complete underwriting review
  • Assists with the review of internal procedures and makes recommendations to the Team Lead. - 3-5+ years of real estate valuation experience in at least one of the following: commercial real estate, data centers or residential real estate
  • Experience with valuations and markets in the US
  • Ability to build internal valuation and due diligence tools
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent time-management skills
  • State Certified General Real Estate Appraiser license required
  • Experience/knowledge of Western European and Asian (specifically Australia) markets is beneficial but not required

Expected base pay rates for the role will be between $85,000 and $140,000 year at the commencement of employment. However, base pay if hired will be determined on an individualized basis and is only part of the total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission earnings, incentive compensation, discretionary bonuses, other short and long-term incentive packages, and other Morgan Stanley sponsored benefit programs.
